Seemed even quieter on my way back home at lunchtime until I saw a couple of Grey Herons flying around. They soon increased to six birds circling around together. Normally a sign of birds grouping together before heading to Entwistle Reservoir ready to start nesting.

Late morning amongst the many people and dogs. The sound of Eagley Band playing around the housing estates drifted across the reservoir, much better than the sound of barking dogs. Had a few pints with mates from the band later. The birds were the only quiet things !

Not much on a morning walk, only a Grey Heron, the tame Canada Goose, Mallards, a Moorhen, and a few Black-headed Gulls, until I got towards the top end of the reservoir.
Here I kept seeing ripples and bubbles from a small diving bird amongst the trees by the footpath. It took me nearly half an hour to get a brief view and confirm it was a Little Grebe. My first one here for years.

I passed through again in the afternoon, adding a pair of Goosanders to the morning list. Black-headed Gulls had increased to 80+ with a couple of Common Gulls.

I was told there was a flock of thrushes in the field between Grange Road and the railway. A venture into the field revealed 30+ Redwings.

7.45am to 9am. Very windy with hardly anything showing on the Information Centre side. A little better on the sheltered side.

1 Grey Heron, the tame Canada Goose, 32 Mallards, 5 Moorhens, 12 Black-headed Gulls, and a Lesser Black-backed Gull on the reservoir.
Woodland birds included 2 Great Spotted Woodpeckers (one by the yatch club & one along Grange Road), 1 Nuthatch at Lees Cottages, and a few Greenfinches, Siskins, and Bullfinches. One Mistle Thrush heard from up the access road.

9.15am to 9am & 11.30am to noon. Very windy which meant hardly any woodland birds were heard or seen. A calling Sparrowhawk was the only bird worth noting. Not much on the reservoir either.
1 Cormorant
1 Canada Goose
40+ Mallards
5 Moorhens
20+ Black-headed Gulls

Passing Herring Gulls were worth counting though. I saw my first ones as I walked along Grange Road, a flock of seven, which was already unusual for here. Along the reservoir lots more passed, giving me a total of 65. One large flock contained over 50% of this total. Whilst on Wayoh I saw another eight following the same route heading south towards Jumbles, and another three passed during my later visit.

7.45am to 10.10am

1 Cormorant
1 Grey Heron
1 Canada Goose. This single smallish individual seems to be one of the young ones from this year that was always smaller than the others. It is very tame and even tried to follow someone back to her house today after she had fed it and the ducks at Horrobin Lane Car Park. It does not mix with other geese when they are about.

1 Sparrowhawk
9 Moorhens
1 Coot
20+ Black-headed Gulls
1 Lesser Black-backed Gull
19 Woodpigeons
1 Green Woodpecker
4 Great Spotted Woodpeckers
1 Pied Wagtail
9 Wrens
2 Dunnocks
15 Robins
23 Blackbirds
3 Goldcrests
A few Coal Tits, Blue Tits, & Great Tits. Did not see as many as usual due to an absence of Long-tailed Tits
1 Nuthatch
6 Jays
9 Magpies
6 Jackdaws
3 Rooks
3 Carrion Crows
9 Chaffinches
13 Greenfinches
16 Goldfinches

7.55am to 8.55am. Did not stay as long as usual as someone had already been round the reservoir looking for yesterday's Waxwings, telling me there was not much about. They obviously did not stay, not surprising with the lack of berries in the area. The only spot with any berries, by the Information Centre/Cafe, had 20+ Goldfinches & a couple of Siskins.

Reservoir birds :-
3 Cormorants
1 Grey Heron
3 Canada Geese
Numerous Mallards
4 Moorhens
20+ Black-headed Gulls

No Common Gulls yet but I did see two at Turton High School on the way over this morning.

Usual birds on the reservoir yesterday, but the young grebes were now spread all over the reservoir, mainly mid reservoir, but with one on it's own at the top end below the quarry. Maybe the adults are now finally leaving them to survive on their own.

Started off in the small conifer wood by the stables and immediately saw a Great Crested Grebe carrying a fish. The 5 young were calling loudly about 20 yards away by the flooded trees. I then watched a change in the feeding behaviour and what could be called cat & mouse behaviour. A Black-headed Gull was swimming around with the youngsters waiting for the adult to arrive. When she got there she took the young ones into the trees, away from the gull, and then started feeding where the gull could not get to them.

Some other birds :-
3 adult grebes in total
1 Cormorant
1 Canada Goose
48 Mallards
8 Moorhens
1 Coot
4 Black-headed Gulls (I passed 152 at Turton High School)
1 Lesser Black-backed Gull
1 Great Spotted Woodpecker
1 Grey Wagtail
8 House Martins
30+ Swallows

A small wader flew over the information centre through the swallow flock but I could not identify the bird or the call for certain. Sounded like a Curlew Sandpiper and did not sound like one of the commoner species. Not seen close enough or long enough to i.d. from it's fast flight. Unlikely to have landed anywhere due to high water levels.

Chris, sometimes the group splits into two with 3 following one parent and two with the other.
Yesterday I did not see any for almost an hour until they came out of cover. I presume they have split into two groups again.
The gulls are a bit of a nuisance but they seen quite adept at diving.

David thats good to know that they are all still there. I have been a few times checking how they are doing since I saw you and you told me about them. I only live round the corner. Today I could only find 3!!! I was worried as yesterday a couple of Black Headed Gulls kept trying to land on one of them all the time. It kept going under water to escape but as a youngster there will be only so much continuous diving they can do. I assume the gulls think food is being given all the time that they can try and pinch.
