I'd imagine you'd have to ask a fellow birder to do the honors bleh.gif

If you do get bitten , buy a Bite stick from the chemist . Its a pen-like roll-on full of liquid ammonia which will relive the pain from the bite if applied straight away.

But if you get bitten miles from a chemist, try this , its an old army trick for insect bites.

Urine contains ammonia so if your really suffering from a painful bite try peeing on it but just make sure that you don't get bitten again on what you are peeing with. wink.gif

Somebody told me once to cover oneself in Napalm and when you see midges nearby, strike a match (or lighter) and it scares them away before they get chance to bite you. Can this be right ?..........it sounds a bit drastic !?

From a purely professional point of view, I can't find a reason or occasion where I could advocate covering yourself in methylated spirit but baby oil on the other hand...

You probably wouldn't notice a shark biting you if you drank some of that! So it should do the trick for horse flies.

I always carry a few sterile wipes, you can get em pre packed in sachets, for a £1 for 10 and if you get bitten, immediately wipe with a sterile wipe and the affect is that the bite doasnt swell as much and sometimes doasnt appear at all, and it doasnt help not wearing shorts has they bite yer arms then.cry.gifsmile.gifand it does help if your carrying a massive camera bag to keep all the first aid stuff inbiggrin.gif

2 possible remedies:
Avon's Skin So Soft
or
mix equal quantities of Dettol, meths and baby oil and shake well, put it into an atomizer. A mossland resident gave me this recipe and he should know!

Maybe if I take a horse birding with me they'll bite that instead...

Or maybe I could train a swarm of Horse Guard Wasps to fly around with me, anyone know where I can purchase some?

Try using Boots the chemist own brand insect repellent, it works for me while out on Astley moss most nights and the horse flies there are bigger than the horsesbiggrin.gif
