Flock of ~40 finches in Alder trees as I queued at the crazy roundabout. Parked up at Harvester, but they flew around, and then towards the Flash. Didn't have time to get the bins on them, but they were brown & crept around the tree tops. A brief call identified them as ~40 Redpoll
It would be worth checking that corner of the Flash & Golf Course
Adult Mediterranean Gull with small number of Black Headed Gulls on car parks at north end of Leigh Sports Village, adjacent to Marshall Street c.10.30 this am.
Yesterday (5th) at 17:15 from Westbrook centre CP - possible Red Kite flew due west. Didn't have time to grab the bins, but flight style, wing thickness, tail shape all looked good in the 2 second distant view. If I had the same view in Wales, I wouldn't have hesitated about the ID
On the morning of Thursday 11th June an adult Mediterranean Gull was swooping low over Leigh Rd by the Parish Church and Library with several Black-Headed Gull as I drove in to Leigh.
I popped round to my son's this morning to drop some shopping off for him and 3 Buzzards were circling over his house which is less than half mile from Leigh town centre !!
Late report for Saturday 28th December at approximately 15:00: 1 x kingfisher and 1 x raven at Leigh basin, on the Bridgewater canal just before it becomes the Leeds - Liverpool canal. Also, numerous mute swans with at least 4 juvenile on the canal back towards Marsland Green.
A Raven was constantly cronking away in full view from the top of Home and Bargains on Albion Street in Leigh Town Centre around midday today and after a short while it dropped onto the roof of the Market Hall (still cronking away), parading about including along the edge of the building while shoppers busily went about their business 30 feet below!
In flight I got the impression (but in no way confirmed it) the bird may have been one of this year's young, so could they have bred very locally considering this bird's lack of concern at the close proximity of humans?
An Alpine Swift was found after be becoming trapped in the top floor of a mill undergoing renovation by workmen earlier today, the bird was released a little later and flew off south.
Photo on website
The mill was Mather Mill in Leigh but the bird was released in another location and was not seen since release.

Hundreds of Gulls present until 3 minutes ago on field off Wigan Road opposite Hulme Road. At least 5 Great Black Backed Gull adults with many Herring Gulls of all ages. A possible adult Yellow Legged Gull in the throng and another white headed Gull smaller than Great Black Backed Gull. Sadly no binoculars or camera. Similar present last week too. The field has flooded today but last week not flooded. All 5 usual gull species certainly present. Black headed and Common Gulls coming back now.
Dipper seen on Westleigh Brook at the site of the Flood Relief Project. Not bad as the work has only just this week been completed this week. The work had been on going for over one year.
Nice, used to watch one 4 or 5 years ago further up Westleigh Brook near Westleigh Park. Not seen one in Leigh since!

The third bird more then likely one of the first Two seen but you never know seen a few lately around Higher Fold and Butts Bridge area. Plenty Pied Wagtail about also around Tesco and BJs Bingo.
