I'm writing this little post to clarify the "Grey Lag situation" as I think ****strap owes me a pint, and I should value your support. In the early morning gloom at Etherow on Tuesday, 5th, amongst the Canada Geese, it was I who called out "Greylag" and ****strap retorted, "where!?" I noticed his hand was trembling as he wrote in his note book. (I'm not sure if he sighed, "at last!" or not, but if you think he did, can you please let me know by private message, to avoid further embarrassment to our mutual amigo)?
There's not much I won't do for a free pint.

I think you will find Mr.Campbell, that my eye is never taken off the boil in these instances. Mr Ewing, like every other user resistering under a nickname etc, has been contacted (immediately after posting) and is being given the chance to reply to my private message before the adjustment is made.

I notice that you have visited Brereton mere - never had much luck there myself although if you go in that direction Sandbach Flashes are interesting. There - you have enough to keep you busy for a couple of days at least

Morning Sid and thank you.I must admit i've never heard of neumans or ashton's flashes-in Northwich?---Where is Moore nature reserve? Is that altrincham way? Clearly i don't know my own patch! Though i do go to brereton mere sometimes---good for redpolls.G/S woodpeckers and treecreepers. I think it must just be knutsford that seems low on swallows----probably fed up with runway 2 [are'nt we all!] Roy ps----Thanks for flight advice
Morning Icarus and welcome to the forum. When I first read your posting I assumed that you wanted to be really close to Mobberley/Knutsford but seeing as you are prepared to travel to visit my local patch at Dunham you may also like to consider Moore Nature reserve and the Northwich area including Marbury Park and Neumans and Ashton's Flashes. They are probably not much further for you to travel and give a good variety of species. The wooded areas in Tatton can be productive and you can obtain a pass for Rostherne. I hadn't noticed a particular lack of Swallows this year in the areas that I visit.
However, whatever you do don't fly too close to the sun with those wings
Thanks for the advice Henry. Never thought of going to Dunham but will give it a try. Went to have a look at rostherne in January but,as you say you need a scope[did spot some distant Shovelers] Funny enough just got back from Tatton. Not much on the water,but plenty of chiff chaffs in surrounding woods. Did spot a lurking willow tit---not a great view [so maybe Black cap or marsh tit ? difficult for an amateur like me----not singing so id less easy] Anyway will post if i see anything interesting .[though frankly i find most birds interesting] Cheers Roy
Tatton, Rostherne and Dunham are all good spots to try Roy, but attempting to get near to Rostherne is not easy unless you have a fieldscope. Apparently Mobberley is good for Lesser Whitethroats. I've seen Barn Owls and Lapwings around there pretty frequently at different times of year. Keep us informed with how you get on whilst birding. Cheers. Henry.
Hi. this is my first post. I live near mobberley so not much doing bird wise around here[though the land around the airport can be sometimes productive eg whitethroat,garden warblers,buzzards and skylarks] .There are a few meres round here but are suprisingly sparce apart from the usual suspects. So I enjoy reading the various sightings on the forum[vicarious pleasure i guess] . I'm a member of the RSPB and WWT ,so have to wait until i get the time to visit their sights. Anyway thanks for all the postings and if anyone knows of any good spots near Knutsford/Mobberle i'd be grateful Roy ps Is my imagination or are there less swallows about this year?
