A Little egret spent around 5 minutes alongside the small pond in the field next to the filtration lagoons this morning before flying over Botany Bay. At least 20 Chiffchaffs, most singing from along the canal towpath and three Ring-necked Parakeets flying about. Also a single Redshank and 9 Black headed gulls in the flooded field south of the canal at the bend before the moorings.

Adult female and a juvenile Kingfisher were both perched on the little bridge this morning at 09.30am. The juvenile was a very green/blue colour compared to the female who caught a small fish while I was watching.

Unusual to watch a Kingfisher flying low down the length of the Bridgewater canal next to the filtration lagoons.

8.00-9.30am this morning 

At least 52 Common snipe in view as most sat on the far bank due to dog disturbance yet again.

Two Kingfishers fishing at the Delph. One from the small bridge and the other from the rock face about 4' above the water. Both caught small fish while I was watching them for over 45 minutes.

Also seen in the sheep field next to the Bridgewater school were two Brambling with a small flock of Chaffinch.

65 Common Snipe, an easy count as most were feeding or preening out in the open early on. Another 14 Snipe flew in as I was leaving.

Water rail only heard but in its favoured area in the boggy bit near the cottage.

25+ Common Snipe on Warke dam this morning along with 2 Kingfishers and 2 Little grebes.

Willow warbler, Blackcap and Nuthatch seen in the woods with Chiffchaff heard.

A rare sighting for me earlier this afternoon in the boggy area next to the dam was a Water rail feeding a couple of meters from the path.

2 Ring-necked parakeets in trees next to the tunnel under the motorway before flying off over the motorway.

2 Oystercatchers over.

Kingfisher on the dam with at least 15 Snipe.

2 Chiffchaffs calling.

Along the canal to Astley pit and back to Worsley.

Some interesting goose activity recently at the Dam.

21/02/2021 and 25/02/2021 - one single Greylag Goose accompanying the group of Canada Geese that frequent the Dam.

Lots of Kingfisher activity also in the evenings at the moment around the Dam.

A day off work + gorgeous sunny and wintery walk = happy Monday. And some rather excellent birds. Highlights;

3 x nuthatch being boisterous!

2 x male shoveler  and 1 x female

2 magnificent buzzard hunting near the canal on the field. Flew very close and gave me my best view of a raptor yet!

And so nice to walk round in the week when (dare I say it) there are less people about!

A pair of Buzzards were displaying over Wardley woods this morning and another pair including a very light coloured bird were displaying over the filtration lagoons this afternoon.
