A single Waxwing again, flew in from the north off the moors at 11:10 hrs and landed in the plantation in the NE corner of the reservoir. I watched the bird for ten minutes hawking over the plantation in the sunshine and landing repeatedly at the top of a tall willow. It attracted the attention of two Reed Buntings, which landed in the same tree and one followed it in flight on one of its sallies. This is the location Watergrove Waxwing SD909184

Someone else was looking for the bird at 12:30 but was unable to locate it.

Bumping this thread as its not coming up in searches.

Looks to be a good winter ahead again and a matter of time before sightings start coming in. Some seen not too far away in Glossop and Haslingdon.

 

Anyone got any good spots with lots of berries to keep an eye on?

Waxwing arrived around 2pm and stayed until after 2 30 at least.

 

Nice to meet and chat to Paul Carter there and Gordon Yates and un-named man from Horwich for who it was a first.  

 

Had a bouncy flight almost like a Great Spotted Woodpecker then thought Starling or Redwing.  First time I have seen one on it's own!

My first birding of the year apart from counting feral pigeons from a hospital bed most of January with a life threatening illness - but couldn't think of a nicer way to resume birding with this most beautiful of winter migrants.

2pm to 3pm still showing well on Laurel Ave, Darcy Lever, Bolton gorging on the berries.

The male Waxwing showed well at 9.15 this morning at Laurel Ave, Darcy Lever, feeding in the large Cotoneaster tree for 5 minutes before flying over to other side of the road and sitting up in a large tree.

Could I just ask everyone to put the areas of Waxwing sightings on each post please.

This enables anyone not having read previous posts to still know what areas they relate to and not have to either trawl back through the thread or indeed start checking google maps!

Late post for yesterday:
Visited Buckfield Avenue, Ordsall yesterday On arrival got out of the car and 5 Waxwings
landed in the tree. They stayed for less than a minute before flying off over the
houses.Meanwhile lots of Redwings, a few Fieldfares and a Mistle Thrush were
in the trees around the avenue. Stayed for about an hour until about 1.00 pm
when they returned.This time about 25 - 30.They didn't linger either flying off
over the houses after a couple of minutes.

The Waxwings at Ordsall were a bit skittish earlier. They seemed to disperse a little in between the couple of visits they made to the berries. There was quite a few Black-headed Gulls in the area that may have spooked them, I left the area shortly after 12pm and theyd not been to the berries in a while.

20 waxwings on two Rowans on Buckfield Avenue up West Park St 12.00pm today. Wont last more than a few days before its stripped. Also Fieldfare, Redwing and Mistle thrushes pics attached

c20 waxwings just flown overhead trilling away whilst I was stood on pomona, they came from the direction of hulme & flew towards ordSall, Salford probably heading to buckfield avenue, ordsall, Salford.

Just prior to 3pm there were 10 Waxwings in the tops of tall trees beyond the end of West Park Street, Ordsall (as you walk past the 'blocks' towards Colman Gardens). They were with c.40 Redwings and 10 Fieldfares. The flock flew off without re-visiting the berries which they usually feed on in Buckfield Avenue, which was our hope! The berry bush did however host a couple of Mistle Thrushes, c.8 Starlings and 2 Goldfinches. Nice to meet & chat to Steve Judge & look forward to showing him round Newchurch in the future smile

Sorry this is not about further sightings but a bit more personal. I'd have bet my life savings that waxwings would never appear in the street I was literally born in (West Park St.). Truly an unexpected event if ever there was one.

Andy, the Waxwings have been round that area before. I had no less than 61 birds in winter of 2016 literally a couple of streets away from there, Ryall Avenue, Robert Hall St, and St.Josephs RC School.

The 7 Waxwing were still  in Buckfield Avenue when I left at 2.15,  but it was a pity that the light was so poor.  There were still plenty of berries but there was a group of Redwing and Fieldfare actively feeding on the berries. No problems parking on West Park Street

Having searched Chimney Pots and Gartside yesterday without luck I tried Ordsall today. At Gartside a few berries left but had workmen under the trees so not promising during working hours.

Success in Ordsall.

Pretty sure I heard waxwings around the bus station in Hyde at lunch. Checked the trees but didn't see anything, and forgot to double check on my way back to work. Will try to remember to check again tomorrow.

First heard in the bushes on the north side of the motorway, I saw around half a dozen birds fly to the bus station as I crossed the footbridge, then heard them again but couldn't spot them in the trees
