RE: Famous/infamous "secret" birders.

can't believe that no one has mentioned W.E. Oddie, the finder of Britains first Pallas Reed Bunting!

Dermot O'Leary
Evan Dando (Lemonheads lead singer)
The Guillemots
Mike Hooper (think this is the right name) (ex liverpool goalie)

I even heard that Keith Flint the lead singer in The Prodigy was a birder!!

Just found following on internet :-

Britney Spears, I remember hearing it on TV once that she had been on the cover of an American bird magazine, and after hunting the web I found this small comment. Where it says read more does not work because the website has shut down so couldnt get any other info.,

"August 30, 2001 - Peoplenews.com reports Britney Spears is a huge fan of birdwatching and has filled her LA home with pictures of her with birds as well as bird statues. Read more. "

Bet a few of the guys wouldnt mind seeing her at a twitch. :girl:
Singing "Whoops I dipped it again" 3smile.gif

Is it true ???

Ken Clarke Conservative MP is a Birdwatcher. See his Wikipedia entry :-
He is well known for his enjoyment of cigars, jazz and classic cars.[2] He also likes birdwatching and reading political history.

Edwyn Collins (singer in Orange Juice) recently had a brain haemorrage and part of his rehab was to draw birds - as a kid he says he could recognise every British Bird

We bumped into him in Norfolk last year whilst watching a Honey Buzzard.

Marc Riley (ex Fall, ex Creepers, Radio DJ) is a birder I believe. I'm sure I read an article somewhere about birdwatching on a ship. Never bumped into him though! Bet he never told Mark E Smith!

I like Jeremy Clarkson. He says it how it is in generally a funny way.

I also believe that Bernard Cribbins is a birder.

One of my work colleagues (who knows these people) tells me that the frontmen of Manc bands Elbow and Doves - Guy Garvey and Jimi Goodwin respectively - have taken up birding. Expect to see them at a reservoir near you soon.

Clearly birding is becoming 'cool'wink.gif

Is there a link between comedians and birding? - I think I read somewhere that Vic Reeves (of Reeves and Mortimer fame) was also a good birder.

Bill.

Famous/infamous "secret" birders.

Whilst reading one of the papers last week there was an interview with that annoyingly handsome Channel 4 "T4" presenter Steve Jones. During the course of this question and answer interview it came to light that Steve is a skilled, keen and knowledgeable birder. For those of you not familiar with Steve Jones I will quote that fount of all truth and knowledge laughing.gifcynic.giflaughing.gif - Wikipedia - which states that " Steve Jones (born Stephen Ashton Jones 16 March 1977) is a Welsh television presenter, actor and model. He is most well known for presenting Channel 4's T4 strand of programmes. He has become the focus of tabloid coverage and gained a reputation as an avid womaniser, renowned for his links with high-profile celebrity women. But is currently dating Fearne Cotton." I am sure that you have all seen this type of journalism in many papers - how can celebrity/well-known person X be - (a) famous/witty/talented/good looking/a high-achiever/attractive to the opposite sex/successful and yet (b) still have an interest in birds? The basic suggestion of this type of journalism is - that (a) and (b) never, never, ever go together!weirdface.gifweirdface.gif
I think the time is right for a bit of direct action - time to set the record straight - that most birders (there's always the exception isn't there!giggle.gifgiggle.gif) are regular human beings and that "confessing" to liking birds shouldn't be akin to admitting to a drug addiction/ a criminal record or even to once owning a Bay City Rollers record!smile.gif
I think its time for this forum to "out" the famous/celebrity "secret" birders and let the world know that talent and success and birding can go together.
Maybe the real reason that Madonna and Guy Ritchie are splitting up is that she wants to spend more time pursuing her bird-ringing hobby? Is it possible that Terry Wogan is a world expert on gull taxonomy? Maybe someone has seen Alastair Darling in one of the hides at Minsmere? I think we should be told.... - so if anyone has any stories (real or imagined - nothing libellous of course!) and wishes to "expose" someone famous as being a birder - then this is the perfect opportunity..........

Bill.
