RE: OTHER HOBBIES

So just how many of your ARE Fall fans? I've been one since 1977. Got most of anything they've even burped to vinyl and all the classics. They've gone up and down a tad recently but 'Imperial Wax Solvent' is back on form. Renegade is a bit of hoot too. Poor ghost writer in his house (pub)

That's a bit of a come down then. And it's The MIGHTY Fall.

There can't be many local drummers around who haven't been in The MIGHTY Fall, surelywink.gif

Dusted off the bats for a punk golf bash round Alti GC this evening with my mate Shad. Not played a round for about 3 years - great fun especially making par on a par 4 in regulation to the green (yes, we're ****). On the way Moorhen, Woodies, Crows, Pied Wag, Willow Warbler singing, GS woodpecker calling. No other birdies were involved or harmed in the completion of this round.

6-GARDENING-A BIT WEIRD THIS ONE AS I USED TO HATE THINGS LIKE THIS BUT IT SEEMS THAT AFTER THE AGE OF 40 YOU START TO APPRECIATE THINGS AS A KID YOU WOULD HAVE HATED.

....I know what you mean there John. There was a time when I would have rather re-grouted Audenshaw Reservoirs using the back of a teaspoon before doing any gardening. smile.gifLike nasal hair these things do catch up with you. I've never thought of it as a hobby, but I do enjoy gardening these days.

Birding does tend to cross over in to other bits of life, after all you can be sub-conciously 'birding' all the time you are out anywhere, that radar can't just be turned off. One thing I remember about the Glastonbury Festival is Chiffchaffs in all the hedges around the site.

Watching The Cure at a festival in Belgium I noticed a Swift approaching from behind the outdoor stage. As it passed over the stage the guitarist Perry Bamonte obviously noticed it and watched it flying around overhead. That's what I call multi-tasking, playing guitar on-stage and following a Swift at the same timesmile.gif

Haven't actually played football for years now, I doubt I could last 90 minutes these days. The last game I played was probably on the Scillies when the Birders XI defeated St Mary's FC one year in a memorable victory. I stick to watching it these days, having watched Wigan Athletic since 1978. Again, you can't turn off that birding radar - Peregrine and Ring-Necked Parakeet being among the species seen at games.

The 'dead zone' you speak of John was indeed when most birders of years ago traditionally turned to moths but the 'zone' is pretty non existant now. Top birding covers all 12 months with no exceptions, terns, return passage waders and seabirds all come into their own rarity wise in those 'dead months' but the less out there looking means more for us that are, so please carry on and ignore this post biggrin.gif

For me, in no particular order:

Moths - do this at other times as well, but its just a happy coincidence that some of the best months for moths are not that good for the local patch.

Dragonflies - Ditto

Football - Watching Wigan Athletic with my son, and taking my son to his football training/matches.

The Gym (Sad?) - Keeping fit (but also the rather nice hydro pool and sauna get a fair bit of use).

Computers/internet.

Shame on that man there is no such thing as the dead zone its just harder to find the little blighters, but if you are bored there is always bird booksbiggrin.gif

Time maybe to brush up on knowledge about orbital rings and eye rings scapulars and greater coverts moult in birds. always a good time to practise.

As for the friday 13th been unlucky AMERICAN KESTREL CORNWALL 1976
ROLLER AYRSHIRE 1976 RED-RUMPED SWALLOW KENT 1988
TEREK SANDPIPER ETC all birds found today 13 JUNE IN PAST YEARS.

But some of us are really sad and only do birding, have meant to get into dragonflies etc but never get round to it.

Lee Evans collect dinky toys thats a fact.

KEEP BIRDING, biggrin.gif

OBVIOUSLY MOST BIRDERS WOULD SAY BIRDING WAS THIER HOBBY!BUT WE USED TO HAVE THIS DISCUSSION IN THE DISTANT PAST ME AND BROWNY,WE OFTEN WONDERED WHAT OTHER HOBBIES PEOPLE WHERE APART FROM BIRDING?SOME PEOPLE START TO THINK SOMEONES GIVEN UP BIRDING IF THEY DON'T SEE THEM FOR A FEW MONTHS/YEARS,BUT THAT MAY NOT BE THE CASE.I KNOW THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO BIRDING IS AN OBSESSION!!AND NOTHING ELSE MATTERS,YET THERE ARE OTHERS WHO ARE JUST AS MUCH INTO OTHER HOBBIES?JUGGLING THIS, THAT AND THE OTHER,WITH WORK,FAMILY,COMITTMENTS,ANYWAY HERES MINE IN NO REAL ORDER

5-FISHING-ON OFF LOVE AFFAIR SINCE FISHING AS A 5 YEAR OLD WITH MY DAD WHO UNFORTUNATELY DIED WHEN I WAS 10cry.gifBEFORE SOMEONE CHIPS IN IVE BEEN THROUGH ALL THE ETHICAL STUFF OF SHOULD SOMEONE WHO LOVES WILDLIFE FISH,STUFF,BUT IN A STRESSFULL JOB I NEED SOMETIMES TO JUST,SIT AND THINK ABOUT NOTHING,AS I DON'T CATCH MANY FISH ANYWAY,AND I CAME TO THE CONCLUSION YEARS AGO,THAT THERE ARE MUCH WORSE THINGS IN THE WORLD THAN ME CATCHING A COUPLE OF FISH AND PUTTING THEM BACK STRIEGHT AWAY,BY THE WAY ITS 2 YEARS SINCE IVE FISHED.cry.gifAND I DO LIKE CORMORANTS A LOTsmile.gif
6-GARDENING-A BIT WEARD THIS ONE AS I USED TO HATE THINGS LIKE THIS BUT IT SEEMS THAT AFTER THE AGE OF 40 YOU START TO APPRECIATE THINGS AS A KID YOU WOULD HAVE HATED.SUES REALY THE GARDENER AND WE GROW,HERBS,FRUIT,LOADS OF BUDDLIAS FOR THE BUTTERFLIES(PHOTOGRAPHY)
