I spent an hour or so on the Moss after work this evening.

Mute Swan still on Sheldon Pool unringed very territorial
Pair of Canada Geese, male bird? chasing man and toddler away after they went close to its mate

A trip to the Moss this evening after work

Visited Ashton Moss on Sunday.

24+ Lapwing including 19 being harrassed by a Peregrine, the Peregrine then lost interest moved away and stooped and then disappeared over a mound
c30 Linnet, finally seen after hearing them practically every time I've visited the Moss!

first visit of year all ponds frozen. topped up feeders by car the home for breakfast then back down to see whats about

mockeridge end the birds where near as damn it perching on us as we watched the feeders then walked up the lane motor way table was empty but pigeons are the animal equivilent of a hoover. the level crossing feeder was empty but evidence of activity could be seen on the way back to sheldon pool we spotted 5 fieldfare and 4 mistle thrush we stopped to watch them another bird appeared and this had a RED breast " American Robin " we both said then the sun went behind a cloud GUTTED has anyone else notice how vivid the breast colour is on Fieldfare we hadnt

just the usual suspencts in small numbers 20 species in all

late report for boxing day

12.00 12.45

no sign of your canadas racheal pool thawing but no wildfowl in sight save two mute swans that just couldnt prick up enough confidence to land if only i had my camcorder with me. stocked level crossing feeder with fat balls flushed a snipe on the wet meadow near the garage.
a mixed flock of 50+ fieldfare and mistle thrushes were on the golfcourse adj to sheldon pool

AHHH... wonder if these are from Stamford Park boating lake, when I did the WEBS count on Sunday the lake was frozen & I was missing around 100 geese!! Wondered where they got to.

all water frozen birds seen

saturday

me and the boy (connor) went down to put seed at the feeding areas a few of the dog walkers now drive onto the moss and park near the motorway brdge feeders so we have moved them (not the table) up near the railway line, then walking back down turner lane we threw fat balls into some of the bushes, at the mockeridge end we put fat balls in the trees and seed near the paddock gate.

Hi Nigel,

I decided to check out your mystery ducks on Sheldon pool this lunchtime and can confirm that they are definitely Wigeon. One is an eclipse male. It stretched one its wings and showed the white forewing. The other is probably a female.
Also heard a Kingfisher calling but was unable to locate it.
A Chiffchaff was singing from a belt of trees on the north side of the track to Mockridge garden centre.
Let me know if you find anything else interesting on the local pools, such as a funny looking grebebiggrin.gif

grey heron ( there seems to be 2 or 3 individuals )

shoud be the build up to gulls coming across soon. last year was getting in excess of 5000+ gulls a night over head .

first visit to the area since05/05/09 been busy working decided to walk instead of using the car and will be doing it again as I can use the full length of reyner lane from the cricket ground to the mockeridge plantation.

going to put feeders up at this end keep your eyes peeled

patch total is now 49 (what will the 50th bird be answers on a post card)

has any one seen any birds at the feeding station we have only seen 1 great tit but the feed is going some where

Just a note to say that I also saw the Peregrine
flying down the side of the new Police headquarters
on Wednesday dinnertimeish. Sat in my car and
it flew right over me, not very high either.

2 canada geese (one still looks like on nest & opposite side to where dogs go)

driving home down lord sheldon way @ approx 4.15 (dont tell the boss) and starlings jackdaws wood pigeons and lapwings all shot up had to stop at the lights at the turning and saw my first peregrine in Ashton let alone local patch

There was no signs of swans yesterday, canada geese were squabbling- one looked like it was on nest, will go over later & check for swans and find that feeding station (any excuse) smile.gif

the mute swan nest was on the left of the sheldon pool as you look towards the garden centre on the edge of the willows in was still there on easter monday but as was said before SOME dog walkers treat the area as there own we saw LRP only because a dog walker was on the main part of the golf course behind the invisible fence with keep out signs
do you think the swans where not quite old enough to sucsessfully breed ??????????
