Bank Holiday Friday. Worked the Southport and Ormskirk route but couldnt get to Marshside as some of the customers nearby didnt need any goods.
En-route from Burscough to Formby through farmland roads. - 1 soaked Corn Bunting on wires - 2 Whitethroat - 1 Meadow Pipit - Lapwing with young, driving 2 Lesser Black-backed Gulls away - c45 finch types alighted from a stubble field, silhouettes though and were flying further away, I didnt get a good look
Managed a trip over on Saturday (15th January 2022) to see the Snow Goose when it was on Plex Moss. Only just sorted the pics hence late post!
Initially no sign but I headed east along Plex Moss Lane and found a huge flock of Pink-footed Geese in flight, a quick scan with bins allowed me to pick out the Snow Goose pretty easily. There was a big Pheasant shoot going on and I reckon that this was making the geese pretty restless. I did a U-turn and headed back west following the flock. They came down in a sheep field by Plex Moss Lane and started to feed on the grass giving me the chance to grab several digiscoped images, two of which are attached, the first uncropped and the second cropped down to a panoramic format.
The Snow Goose, that has been in this general area since the 9th January, showed well this afternoon, albeit distantly, on Downholland Moss, amongst a couple of hundred Pink-footed Goose.
- 5 Red-legged Partridge - 2f Grey Partridge - c20 Redwing flock - 2 single Fieldfare - 1 Curlew over - masses of Pink-footed Geese on return route near Scarisbrick - lots of Skylark on the move
Nice to watch two f/juv Marsh Harriers swooping low over golden wheat fields in the early Autumn sun this afternoon. Birds stayed close together often landing in the ripened corn.
Kestrel and Buzzard also hunting along the lanes here
A flock of a dozen or so Red Legged Partridge was loudly clucking nervously , presumably upset by all the raptor activity !
En-route from a delivery in Ormskirk to one in Birkdale, Southport. Sightings were in the Halsall farmland area.
- 4 Red-legged Partridge - 1 Corn Bunting on wires - 2 Common Buzzard - plenty of Lapwing - numerous Stock Doves feeding with Woodpigeons - also I pulled up alongside a dry ploughed field and there was a large flock of Fieldfare feeding, many of them took to the air as a tractor neared them, possibly c100-150 birds
