A little egret foraging in a boggy corner of a horse field adjacent to Middlewood Road, Higher Poynton, Cheshire. 

 

See at 8:15am today.

 

First egret I have seen in Poynton.

Apologies for the late reply John, you are right, Middlewood Rd not Middlewood Way. A lot of the signs say Middlewood Way towards Nelson Pit and the Brickworks, local attraction signs rather than Road name signs, my mistake.

From the Boar's Head travel along Shrigley Rd North and it becomes Green Lane. It was before it meets Middlewood Rd. The area is fairly open around there, well before the denser wooded area that you get on Middlewood Rd towards the level crossing. It flew a fair height above the road but ahead of us so it wasn't just a fleeting glimpse right above the car, I got a decent look as it headed up towards the top of a tree. I knew exactly what it was. Hope you re-find it.

Hi Rob,
I am guessing you mean Middlewood Road, the one that crosses a level crossing before joining the A6 (Middlewood Way is the disused railway line that runs almost parallel). How far down there was your sighting?

Approx 5pm...on my way home with my brother from a funeral reception at the Boar's Head on Shrigley Road in Higher Poynton. A bird flew across the road and up to the top of a tree just ahead of us as we headed down Middlewood Way towards the A6. A Hawfinch, totally unexpected!

Waxwing flew in at 0830. Sat in tree close to berries, spending most of its time preening and looking around.

Single Waxwing still showing very well today, and still there when I left at 14:45. In the same place as previously mentioned below.
Nice to meet Rob Smallwood, and quite a number of interested local people.

The single Waxwing again this morning in the same location and showing well as I left at 11.30.  It is mobile at times and doesn't stay long on the yellow berries.

Adult Waxwing was showing well near junction of Dickens Lane/Vernon Rd between 12:30 and 16:00 hrs.

Waxwing showing well in the same location as yesterday as I left a 11.45.  Dickens Lane / Vernon Road Higher  Poynton. Seems to be easily  spooked  by dog walkers.

The Waxwing was still there late afternoon in fading light and heavy snow cry It stayed right at the top of a large tree at the Dickens Lane/Vernon Road junction and never came down for me. The light was attrocious and it was high up but as John says they are incredibly thin on the ground so far this winter so any view was better than  none (record piccy taken with my phone hand-held attached).

A single Waxwing feeding this afternoon on yellow berry trees near the corner of Dickens Lane and Vernon Road. They are a bit thin on the ground this winter.

A pair of ring-necked parakeets seen flying over my house in Higher Poynton on Friday 30th July 2017 and seen landing in near by tree.  I also heard there calls on 31st July 2017 from the garden.

Short walk around Higher Poynton on Saturday 22nd April 2017, including Princess Incline, Middlewood Way and Jacksons Brickworks.  Species recorded as follows:

 

Canada Goose, Robin, Wood Pigeon, Swallow, Lapwing, House Sparrow, Carrion Crow, Chiffchaff, Great Tit, Song Thrush, Wren, Jay, Willow Warbler, Blackbird, Blue Tit, Bullfinch, Coot (pair on nest with chicks).

Assume you know of the hide overlooking the river Phil? If not over the weir bridge - take the left road by the side of pool, and at the end there is a gate with a rope over the post (nature reserve) Just go through the gate and the path will lead you to the hide.

Sue and I are popping down to see it tomorrow. It would be nice to see it in our county, but as we've never seen one before anyway, we've decided to go. Perhaps we'll try to shoo it northwards! Will probably make a day of it and pop to Etherow CP whilst down there.

Did you have "the camera you can no longer get"? If so we did meet, but the other "Rob" was in the four that left. My friend is a BTO man and in the High Peak Group if that helps you place him. He is "the expert" in the "we three"smile.gif

I turned up at just as the 4 left and recognised at least one of the four but couldn't place him - so I suspect we did meet - I was trying to digi-scope the bird.

When we arrived about 12.15 ish, there were about 6 already there - at least 4 scopes. I asked if anyone posted on this site, and one guy pointed me to another. I shook hands with him - sure he said he was Rob. Anyway, I was the little guy with a green cap. My friend had a beard.

Geoff - I'm not sure that it was me that you met - I did meet two gents and a lady from Wilmslow, but I never introduced myself, nor did they.

You may have met someone else!

Two of "we three" went to (I think it was" New Home Farm - lane on left just before Jacksons Brick Works) this morning to see a Cattle Egret. Jolly good, we saw it follow the cattle and fly. Also saw a Buzzard, Two Kestrel and a few Mistle Thrush.

Also met a fellow poster - Rod or Ron
