Ventured into the back garden several times throughout the day but no sight or sound of yesterdays Yellow-Browed Warbler. Rather breezy at times today and suspect it is likely to still be around but unless it calls going to be hard to locate. Cheers

No sign of the Great Egrets along Thornham Old Road this morning between 11.00 a.m. and noon or in fields to the South and West. There was a shooting party between the Tavern and the park, which probably explains why most bird life was distant.

If you are looking for the GREAT EGRETS - park at the Summit Inn and walk up Thornham Old Road (it's also called Thornham Lane on some maps), be prepared to check all the fields up to the Tandle Hill Tavern and please view only from the road.

The 3 GREAT EGRETS still present on Thursday 31st October 2019 in the fields on Thornham Old Road between the Summit Inn and the Tandle Hill Tavern.

I have just been sent some mobile phone film from a resident who said that the birds were present for most of the day.

Hooded Crow still being reported occasionally in a garden along Oozewood Road, Royton, it was first reported on 5th May 2019

The observer identified it as "exactly like the one in Wigan" from a film of the Hooded Crow that was present in Ashton-in-Makerfield, Wigan borough in early 2018, but birders have not confirmed the identification yet, either in the field (just the original observer has seen the bird) or from photos (the observer has not managed to take a photo of the bird yet)

Oozewood Road runs along the southern edge of Tandle Hill Country Park and there are plenty of fields that corvids feed in as the road turns into track just beyond Oozewood Farm

Please respect residents privacy

Thanks very much for the detailed instructions Dave. :)

This is where I looked, but it was already 4PM when I arrived there and the weather appeared to be taking a turn for the worse. Will try again, next time I'm in the area.

Charles,

Think you may have looked in the wrong place for the Tree Sparrows. From Tandle Hill Tavern walking towards Oldham/ Rochdale Road you will come to a lane heading directly towards the memorial on top of Tandle Hill. The lane  entrance has got stainless steel guards etc to stop push bikes getting in. Walk up here and you will see large piles of earth etc on your left, the Tree Sparrows are usually on the ground or perched in the hedges.

Hope this helps,

Dave Ousey

Had a look around the area this afternoon. 3 Dunnocks finding plenty to eat on the dungheap and a flock of Crows also taking an interest.

Plenty of House Sparrows in hedges of farms around the Tandle Hill Tavern, but I couldn't find any Tree Sparrows amongst them.

If anyone else wants to go, these are the original instructions. .........
Tandle Hills, Royton.  Hoopoe in Silver Birch tree/ in garden of unoccupied bungalow off Tandlewood Park at the northern end (near Tandle Hill Road). Still showing well in the general area. Please respect the privacy of residents

Just to be clear NOT the garden of the unoccupied bungalow (no 11), the garden of no 7 - about halfway along. Also the garden of no 5. The guy living there knows Mike Ausberger and is going to be primed to let him know if any other interesting birds turn up. He's been keen to encourage all sorts of wildlife in his garden

It must be the same neighbour who is updating that did it last night when myself, Steve Burke and Simon Gough were there. He seemed like such a nice chap and I think that is mainly due to the impeccable behaviour of the birders present, and it seems that has carried on today. So well done everyone and may I say, having watched the Treales (Lancashire) bird last year and a couple abroad too, they are well worth the long wait. Good luck!

I don't normally go twitching rare birds except if its very local. But the hoopoe is such an unusual bird I just couldn't resist. I was suprisingly released early from work and I had to wait 30 mins before my 1st hoopoe sighting once I arrived. He was only seen along the top half of the garden for a short time but enabled full brief views. I had to wait an hour before he showed again. The neighbour of the garden was most kind and helpful and kept us up to speed with its behaviour. I went home happy at 6pm with my new tick once he moved out of sight again.
