Yep there it is on page 53. I didn't know that the carolinensis was the Green Winged. Although it does say N American so i should have worked it out. Thanks guys, i hope the bird sticks around till fri then i can get alook.
I have, this evening, just been putting the finishing touches to my new article on the identification of Green-winged Teal (and hybrids), complete with lots of lovely pickies! I will be publishing it tomorrow, so keep your eyes on the website.
Hi Dean It is described in my old Bertel Bruun Hamlyn guide book from the early 70`s as a member of the North American race of Teal. Drake has a vertical white band on its side and the female is indistinguishable from the European Teal.
yes you may have missed it collins page 53 carolinensis picture in top right hand corner. Lars Jonssons Birds of Europe p96 text picture opp Helms Wildfowl madge and burn plate 29 teal. keep birding.
It is in the Collins Dean. There`s a small picture of a drake in the right-hand corner of the (Common) Teal illustrations, captioned `carolinensis` (N America).
It is also mentioned in the text of Common Teal under `Variation`.
There`s a description in The Handbook of Bird Identification (Beaman & Madge), and it`s covered in the Sibley guides.
Thought i'd read up about Green Winged Teal. It doesn't seem to be in any of my field guides. Thought it would be in the Collins but no. Unless i've missed it somewhere. Any suggestions?
