RE: Winwick

56 waxwings still present in Myddleton Lane at 8.00 am this morning. As I drove by at 10.00 am, there were still c.45 and at 11.00am I could only see three as I passed. They seem to be moving between here and Rectory Lane and Green Lane, when disturbed by passers-by.

Thanks to mike for reporting these.

Saw these about 3pm then took a walk down waterworks over the motorway and down barrow lane then back. The waxwings were back at mydleton lane about 4.30 pm so might be there again first thing with luck.

Not much about on the walk flock of around 30 tree sparrows and 2 buzzards on waterworks lane.

Nothing much at all on barrow lane and the farmers were hard at work ploughing the fields which might have had something to do with it.

Thanks again for the early info on these, Mike. Didn't just get a Winwick tick but also a garden tick, as I could see them whirling about when I went out to top up my feeders

Late afternoon walk from home across the fields to Highfield Lane down the Lane around Houghton Green Pool and back via Waterworks Lane (via a slightly dodgy rush hour crossing of the dual carriageway) In the trees around the recently ploughed field behind the house 75 Chaffinches and 12 Tree Sparrows were perched. By the large pool which has formed on the field to the west of Highfield Lane 28 Meadow Pipits, 85 Chaffinches, 40 Greenfinches, 3 Yellowhammers were feeding, while a single Corn Bunting was singing. On the raised, recently ploughed fields to the east of the Lane, masses of gulls, Lapwings and corvids were feeding. I estimated the flock held c.850 Black-headed Gulls, 25 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, 15 Common Gulls, 70 Rooks, 130 Jackdaws, 140 Lapwings and 150 Starlings - spectacular!

Houghton Green Pool was fairly quiet, with 1 Oystercatcher, 330 Black-headed Gulls, 6 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, 5 Common Gulls, 5 Buzzards, 1 Kestrel and 20 Wigeon along with the usual odds and ends.

Your Merlin sighting ties in nicely with the bird I had on Highfield Moss.

RE: Winwick

Having got a few days off work decided to have a nice walk in excellent weather to day, from Winwick up to parkside farm 1st vist to this site.
Spent about an hour viewing stubble field and hedge opposite farm
lots of chaffinch about 100 or so
3 Brambling 2 male 1 female
6 Yellow Hammers
1 Reed Bunting (male)
2 Corn Buntings
2 Stock Doves
5 Sky Larks

Then I headed along barrow lane towards Winwick lane
30+ Fieldfare in fields to the left a with a few starlings in with them
5 Stock doves again on the left but in next field
2 Crows with these
20 Lapwing far field on left again
1 Buzzard sat on post back of the far Field on left
3 singing Skylarks

Then a walk down sandy brow lane to croft
not a lot seen did find
2 Grey Partridge in small horse paddock on the left, I then
had a walk up lady lane to see if little owl was about no luck with the owl
but decided to find some were to sit and have a bite and drink befor long walk back to Winwick and bus home.
Was glad I did as whilst siting having my drink spotted large BOP flying from my left fairly high across footpath leading to abbey close croft, a quick look with bins soon had me putting the scope on to it
and my 1st thoughts were confirmed It a was female Goshawk heading east northeast I am thinking it was a 1st winter bird
but not sure on that but well happy to have spotted it.
All in all a good day out certainly will be back up that way soon (I have been around croft befor but not up to barrow lane very nice patch)

A great visit early this morning on my way back from work in lovely conditions

2 Grey Partridge - in field opposite parking spot across from Parkside Farm
2 Brambling - feeding in the flooded stubble, amongst the multitude of Chaffinch in the next field. Also here were 4 Pied Wagtail and several Tree Sparrow.
30+ Fieldfare - in field adjacent to north end of Barrow Lane
8 Corn Bunting - on hedge that dissects Barrow Lane. This is becoming a more reliable spot than the 'Corn Bunting tree'. Also here, 2 male and 1 female Reed Bunting and 20+ Skylark.
No Yellowhammer, but Woodpigeon beyond count

There's been a lot of work going on at Parkside Farm recently John, there's usually half a dozen of their cars parked up at the top of Barrow Lane. I was there this afternoon and saw two birders - Bill from Risley Moss rambling off into the distance, and a guy from Chester called Joe. We counted 14 Corn Buntings, seven in the tree behind Parkside Farm and another seven on a distant hedgerow on the other side of Parkside Road. We also counted three Brambling but the finch flock was very distant, there were probably more. Plenty Yellowhammers around too.

I can see why it is in this thread as the whole area is treated as a 'patch' by some locals that I have chatted to and to have that 'patch' spilt under different counties would be a wee bit awkward. I initially didn't know which county Barrow Lane was in but did suss it out using OS Maps, but was UK yearlisting anyway not county listing. I did have an enquiry from a mate though & was able to let him know that it was Merseyside rather than Cheshire so it matters to some, I agree

All this doesn't detract from the fact that it is a fantastic site and long may it continue, hats off to the farmer (ref. Mikes post).

Just a quickie too from an outside visitor - how far down the track towards the farm do folk venture to get closer to the 'Corn Bunting Tree'?

I can see what you mean Pete, but if Ian's quite happy to leave as is then, personally, I am too. I only mentioned it as I felt a tad guilty about sticking Barrow Lane in the Winwick thread in the first place! There must be other threads where the problem of boundaries occurs (Horwich Moors springs to mind) and they seem to manage okay.

Rather than call it winwick and environs why not call it Newton park ?

That's its real name you can see it on multi map.

That would encompass barrow lane and hermitage and even the old parkside colliery land which although private land stil contains huge numbers of wildlife just we can't go there even though many do everyday. But it could cover everywhere other than highfield moss and winwick itself. That would seem to be a good catch all and if members wanted to find it they could see it in the map.

What do you think ?

It doesn't matter to me which thread they are in or what it is called. My concern was more to ensure people don't travel here expecting a County tick etc. As long as people understand this I am personally OK with the thread as it stands. No worries.

I think its best not to get caught up in the potential confusion of out of county boundaries and given, for the purposes of this forum that sightings don't form any official records anyway, that these posts are fine in this thread

I'm happy to make this thread 'Winwick and environs' though

Yes - I fear the confusion was probably caused by me latching my first post about Barrow Lane on to the Winwick thread. Perhaps we should start a new 'Barrow Lane and environs' thread in the Lancashire & Merseyside Forum as it does appear to be quite a productive area? It's possible to view birds flying across three different counties from Barrow Lane!

Yesterday there were 18 Corn Buntings, 34+ Yellowhammers, 200+ Chaffinches and 3 Bramblings here.

Higher level stewardship is being applied to the land by the farmer from Woodhead Farm who owns or leases the land. The patch opposite Parkside Farm was left for weeds and is now mostly Fat Hen. The Chaffinch flock is often feeding in here unseen - it also roves around a bit. There is also a 1 acre plot of uncut Barley (out of sight) behind the Corn Bunting tree which is attracting the birds here too. Consequently large numbers of finches and buntings can be present in the area but out of sight.

Just a reminder that this land is technically in Newton-Le-Willows - the Cheshire border is just the other side of Woodhead Farm.

Excellent info Jonathan, I too had about 15-17 Corn Buntings in the same tree, they weren't there when I started my walk but were there on cue when I was returning to my car Also just one Yellowhammer with them and a couple of Chafinches. There was a single Grey Partridge in the field over the road opposite Parkside Farm. The biggest surprise (although in this winter maybe not!!) was as I was just approaching my car, a flock of 25 Waxwings flew directly over Parkside Farm but carried on in a due east direction and headed out of sight, I doubt if they landed locally

My first visit here, I usually only go to Waterworks Lane & Houghton Green Flash in this area, but won't be my last, an excellent site Thanks for all the birders on this thread for posting the info, birds, directions etc

Two people were walking their dogs on the stubble where the Corn Buntings were feeding last week. I spoke to one guy but the other one headed back across the fields before I could get to him. There's not much I can do, but I explained to the guy I spoke to about the buntings, how rare they are in the area, etc. and simply asked him to keep off the stubble if possible, he seemed like a nice bloke so hopefully he'll take heed. Any fields left uncultivated (set aside, etc.) seem to be targeted by dog walkers these days, who seem to think they can wander where they like.

Saw three Corn Buntings - a bird flew over the stubble followed ten minutes later by two more which I'm sure lifted from the stubble in the SE corner which the dog walker hadn't covered. Several Skylarks singing too.

A brilliant morning, in every sense. Sunny with a heavy frost, the temperature was - 6 C at 7.00 am! The garden held single Brambling and Redwing among the many finches, along with a Jay and 11 Blackbirds. Decided to do my BTO Thrush Survey of Arbury and Peel Hall, so walked over the fields which were iron hard and pretty barren on the way out. Things picked up at Radley Lane, where 9 Siskins were feeding in Alders, alongside many common birds. A few thrushes were around, mainly Blackbirds with the bushes largely picked clean of berries. On the return over the Arbury fields, things got much better. Among the 26 Lapwings were 2 Golden Plovers, while nearer to the farm buildings 60 Meadow Pipits, 27 Fieldfares, 5 Mistle Thrushes, 6 Linnets and 10 Goldfinches were all feeding in the stubbles. Finally, a skein of c.120 Pink-footed Geese flew over, going north-west and looking superb in the sun-light. Then off to Silver Lane Pools to cover one of my other thrush tetrads

There has been a large build up of Jackdaws in the fields west of Hollins Lane last few weeks. Typically 200-300 birds, on 2nd there were over 500 present and not a single other corvid species at that time.

Hi Mike, not bumped into you for a bit. Yes, the lane is jumping with birds at the moment - good to see some stubble fields being left for the winter! Had half-a-dozen Peregrine sightings, too, since I moved in Febuary 2011, along with regular Merlins last winter - they may have had a poor breeding season, along with a lot of other raptors.

Hi David

The various species you observed in Waterworks Lane have been around for a couple of weeks now in roughly the same numbers but no sign of a Merlin yet. Also worth checking the fields to the west of Golborne Road i.e. across the road at the far side of the Waterworks Lane fields you have been watching. Quite a bit of stuff here including sizeable Grey Partridge coveys. I used to see Peregrine on the pylons from here each winter but none so far. Keep looking!

A short but very productive walk out of the garden, across the field to Waterworks Lane, down the lane and back. I knew it was going to be good when 2 Snipe and 3 Meadow Pipits got up within thirty yards of leaving the garden The garden itself held 10 Blackbirds, 40 Chaffinches, 35 Greenfinches, 13 House Sparrows and 10 Collared Doves., though the Bramblings and Redwings seem to have moved on. Over at Waterworks Lane, 3 Grey Partridge and 3 Yellowhammers were with about 60 Tree Sparrows and a few Chaffinches. The stubbles immediately to the east of the lane were alive with birds. A mixed flock of Starlings and Linnets was moving around, with roughly 170 of the former and 55 of the latter. At the far end of the field a sizeable thrush flock was feeding nervously. When they flushed they were mainly Fieldfare (c.60) with maybe 15 Redwing and a similar number of Skylarks amongst them. Four Mistle Thrushes, 2 Song Thrushes and another 15 Blackbirds were encountered further down the lane. As for raptors, 2 each of Sparrowhawk, Kestrel and Buzzard was good but I'd expect a Merlin soon if the bird numbers hold up. They seem to be in short supply so far this winter. has anyone come across one in the Winwick area yet this winter?

Cheers David
