2 Peregrines flying around the T1/T3 tarmac area for a short while. 1 was smaller than the other...a male and female I presume. Also 5 Meadow Pipits and a singing Skylark over the runway/grass area.
I visited the airport today and saw two Peregrines, the pictures I have posted are from last summer it was too gloomy to get any decent pictures today. the pictures are taken from level thirteen of the multi-storey car park at terminal 1, I have seen peregrines at the airport for some years now.
I was contacted today by Paul Stone who had been viewing some video of planes at Manchester Airport during May 2016 on Youtube when he noticed a male 'grey' harrier fly past as one was taking off!
He contacted me and expecting to see a blurring image of a grey blob in the distance, when I viewed the video I was amazed to see the bird flying alongside the plane on the runway (in between plane and camera!) and instantly identifiable as a male 'grey' harrier and after viewing stills of the footage, a very fine male Hen Harrier.
The video can be viewed here and a still I have taken from it can be found below. Forward to 33 minutes and 15 seconds into the video for the harrier, which appears from the top right at 33:20. It flies alongside the plane then disappears as it flying out of view only to reappear seconds later as the plane overtakes it.
4pm Lesser Whitethroat singing out in the open in last garden/horse paddock on the National Trust bridleway before it turns into the track alongside runway 3
I'll have to check out the original proposal as this replaces the original phases 1,2 and 3.
At first glance it looks like development goes right up to the edge of Cotterill Clough SSSI. Sunbank Wood looks untouched though.
I've no idea what the additional increase in flights means though - more noise for sure, and do they want large birds like Buzzards breeding in the vicinity or will they want to 'control' them ?
Not visited for a long time because of the airport expansion work. The new road seems to be double yellows all the way and the first plot is now occupied by DHL with more marked out.
Good news is that the 'Redstart hedge' and Lesser Whitethroat spots seem to be unaffected for now. Also some of the plots could attract a Little Ringed Plover ?
Bad news is that the fields used by Lapwing, Partridge and Wheatear are now gone, and the new road goes alongside a pool where Teal were regular in the winter. The stream where Snipe wintered has been drained and most of the hedgerows used by Fieldfare & Redwing have been grubbed up.
Unidentified species of Stork heading into the wind towards Airport from Jodrell Bank direction,it got to Airport boundary, but the wind forced it back towards Styal at 06:45 this morning
Does anybody know if the Barn Owl is still showing here, Ive been coming here for years and never even knew we had Barnies around here..
The location of any Barn Owls (unless under specific circumstances agreed with me) should never be publicised or discussed on this forum, particularly during the breeding season.
