RE: ROOFTOP (ONLY) LAPWINGS AND GOLDEN PLOVER

David

Below is a copy of a message just sent to Ian Campbell.

There have been, I think, two flocks of rooftop Lapwings in Bolton for some time. The Northern flock are invariably around the junction referred to below. The Southern flock could be seen on rooftops adjacent to St Peter's Way in the Raikes Lane area (in particular the VanLiners roof). There was no sign of the Southern flock today and I cannot recall seeing it for some time.

Regards

George Warburton

Ian

Cen Tyres is at junction of Higher Bridge Street, Halliwell Road and Blackburn Road.

If you enter Bolton along St Peter's Way (the dual carriageway accessing the motorway network), carry straight on at traffic lights at end of St P Way, pass B & Q on right, through next lights and pass Mercedes dealership on right. The said junction is at next t/lights.

The birds were on CT roof, the Motor World/AIS roof across the road, on new warehousing behind CT, and on older property behind Motor World.

Regards

George Warburton

Where is Central Tyres?

The small flock I usually see near Sainsbury's in Bolton has been absent this year so far (probably down to the increased frequency of Peregrine sitings in that area).

I'm used to seeing lots of Lapwings roosting on Grosvenor Windows' roof off the M61 near Horwich, as I'm sure many of you are, but I noticed that over 100 birds were on a roof on the opposite side of the Motorway yesterday, on one of the J.Dickinson Recycling & Skip Hire buildings roofs.

Just looked at it on Google Street Map to see if they had captured them, but their shots were obviously taken in the summer with bright sunshine and no birds to be seen!?! On a different note, the Street Map facility is pretty useful if you are visiting new sites that have a road running by, as you can have a pre-look at a location if the Google Camera Car has been past!?

That's interesting, Dave. I'd seen them heading that way from Horrocks Flash a couple of times and wondered if they were going towards the fields near Morrisons. Seaman Way makes sense!

1st August.

At 8.30 - c235 Lapwing on both sides of the roof of the Century Seal warehouse at Pilsworth. This was formerly the Geodis warehouse I think. Also present on the roof at that time - c50 Starling and 2 Feral Pigeon. Lapwings were still arriving in small numbers and on my return journey at around 9.40, Lapwing numbers had increased to c260. 2 Black-headed Gulls had also taken up residence.

Cheers,

Bill.

A small flock of about Lapwing were flying around the Ancoats area at 08:20 yesterday morning. This morning I could see three on the roof of the Westway Nissan garage. There may have been more, but only the edges of the roof are visible from road level.

Good numbers of Lapwings c75 at least, unsure if there was any Golden Plovers with them due to driving this morning and on their usual rooftops of Central Tyres/Kwik Fit and surrounding rooftops on Blackburn road.

At least 39 Lapwing (I think more were on the far side of the roof) at Hindley Green Business Park, Leigh Road, Hindley Green on Monday 23rd Nov. I think the building they were on was called Centrium. Not a site I go past often, but haven't seen them on there previously.

22nd November.

Driving through Rhodes at 10.50 this morning a flock of c60 Lapwing were either being disturbed from or trying to land on the roof of Palletways in Rhodes Business Park. They didn't settle and flew off towards Middleton - none on the roof of McBrides but at 11.15, I counted 58 on the roof of Central Tyres just off the roundabout near Middleton Bus station. Driving whilst simultaneously counting birds on roof tops juggle.gif.....let's see them try that advanced driving skill on Top Gear! laughing.gif Only joking officer!police.gif

Cheers,

Bill

They do seem to be moving about a lot more these days at all locations although still in the general area. Asbestos corrugated roofs are usually favoured though.

That's their old favorite. They also used to use roofs on the old BT building just off Lees Road ( now a small business centre, I think) as well as the light roofs visible behind the Black Swan on Huddersfield Rd. As Riggers noted earlier these used to be favorite roosts 4/5 years ago, but had seemed to be deserted in recent years.

Sounds like where I had them yesterday, Kerry. They're in an awkward place to count properly and there were some in the middle bit the 'V', when I looked behind.

My flock yesterday may have been part of Steve's also, 'cause looking at the map the two places aren't that far apart as the Lapwing fliessmile.gif

1:30 pm today - at least 30 Lapwings on the roof of a large building (I think its a car showroom) at the junction of Lees Road (A669) and Cross street (B6194), Oldham. Was going past in the car at the time, so didn't get an accurate count.
