I wonder if the Manchester City Maine Rd site is going to be developed and this is why there is a lake there? Bare earth would attract both Lapwings and Ringed Plovers/Little Ringed Plovers. Maybe Steven Miles or Ian Campbell can tell us?

Hi Steven
I've just seen your post. It is definitely of interest to have breeding Lapwings and possibly Ringed Plover close to the city centre. We don't have any records in the database from the former Manchester City Stadium site. So we would be pleased to receive your records. See the webpage BIRD RECORDING AND COUNTY RARITIES for how to submit them. It would also be worthwhile you submitting records to the BTO atlas next breeding season. The site is in tetrad SJ89M. Whilst the tetrad has been taken for Timed Visits any additional records would be welcome, particularly as I don't know whether the site is viewable or accessible other than from the houses that overlook it.

We look forward to receiving your records.

Yeah, they did seem to go down in the direction of the Volvo place... Not sure how many are there in total, but I usually see smaller groups of them from the window at work throughout the day (although I should really be working, not birding).

They often settle on the Volvo building but haven't been there for a couple of years - gone are the days when 600+ could be seen.

hello, I've just joined this site on the recommendation of a friend, so I'm not sure whether this is of interest or not, but my house overlooks Manchester City's old ground (Maine Road) and there's an artificial lake there at the moment that has attracted plenty of birds over the course of the summer. I'm pretty sure lapwings were breeding there (at least, they seemed to be there every day) and I've spotted ringed plovers there as well.

C.30 lapwings coming in to roost on the roof of the Royal mill, Hollins, Oldham @ 17.15pm this evening (22nd). A similar number of birds were briefly airborne in the same area around 18.15 pm on Saturday 20th, possibly disturbed by a passing gull.

30 lapwings carpet world thursday oct 11th and probably the same no on sat 13th but some birds in the central valley of the roof. Think the Tesco birds were probably the birds that used hollinwood in past years. Certainly seen roosts at both sites on same trip to work with no sign of movement between them

The Newton Heath birds started building up again in July with a small group (a couple of family parties?) on the 12th. Further sightings on Carpet World roof on the 30th, followed by 6th, 11th,(at least 12 birds), 13th 15th & 17th Sept. Stayed at about that no. on 15th, 16th & 20th then at least 30 birds in flight towards the roof on 26th. Similar nos on 28th, continuing on 1st & 2nd Oct then 4th to 8th. Day off today so no observation. All these sightings at approx 9.50 a.m. on way to work. Will be interested to see if any birds use the roost on the roof of Rose tissues at Hollinwood this year. Only 1 sighting all last winter despite regular use for several winters before

I certainly don't intend on starting this with every post (honestwink.gif), but whilst Riggers has started us off with 'rooftop' Lapwings and these sightings are of particular interest could all future posts on the subject be posted onto this tread please so we can all access all the information at once and see just where they are roosting and track their numbers.

Many thanks
