Most skiens were heading east but several turned NW or even back west and i think that this was due to low cloud over the Pennines/Peak district which was makin them look for an different route or simply just turning them back
Ive seen this happen when there are planes about - we live quite close to the airport though - but maybe a light airccraft from Barton in your case.

7.45am Had around 100 presumed pink footed geese followed by around 50 about 5 mins later- high up & honking flying West End Ashton under Lyne heading South/East
(Saw hundreds in field at weekend in Norfolk eating the farmer's seedlings) Rae
The high-pitched yelping of what must have been Pinkfeet heard over Hazel Grove at 9.30pm on a frosty, moonless, cloudless night. Sounded as if they were travelling south.
Flock of around 80 headed south over Golborne @ 0.840 then decided they did'nt know where they wanted to go and flew in circles over Lane Head. Didnt see which direction they went in after that.

Hello everyone, this is my first post although I have been reading your excellent comments for many months. At 10.03 am this morning approx. 400 pink feet headed east over Irlam in the direction of Sale water park. cheers Mike
I also had a larger skien - c250 - going east over Ashton in Makerfield just after 8am on Friday. I'm fairly confident my counting skills havent decreased to the point where I have miscounted Dave's skien.

C. 160 flew west over the Piethorne Valley on Sunday 12th Sept at 11:40 hrs. I understand that Paul Cliff had two flocks over Watergrove the same day, one of a similar size. Perhaps the same birds?
