Paul, I last saw a Marsh tit at Clifton Marina in 1972 and I have checked it for the last 5 years in Winter and not had a sniff of one. That said, the trees just before the visitors centre are normally full of tits and finches in Winter so it is always worth having a look.
Cheers pete cannnot believe its ten years since the sale bird in Brook Wood was about where does the time go? had a little bird tell me to try Clifton Marina this winter does anyone cover this as a local patch. I have had Small numbers of willow tits 4/5 on carrington moss in winter but ho hum we can but try,as for spending hours on the wigan flashes we wil do and will have fun as well. stay happy keep birding.
i also have put a few hours in scanning the reed beds for a wigan bittern in the depths of winter around horrocks and bryn marsh,only to find that the bittern annual flyround occurs in mid may(see gallery, jake moots photo)but seriously if i find a 'regular' bittern you,ll know about it pronto.
The last reliable Marsh Tit was about 10 years ago.It regulary visited Peter Days(ex county recorder) bird table for two consecutive winters.They used to be recorded in Sunnybank Wood until the Airport built the 2nd. runway over it!!.Its going to be a real BLOCKER.As for spending a couple of days at Wigan Flashes to see Bittern,Woosey you must be joking,I put in literally hundreds of hours there and never saw one.
marsh tit is unfortunately far from easy in the county with records barely annual so its status as a county rarity is well deserved. Dont hold you're breath for one paul!
Bittern is easy - just sit on the canal-side at Pearson`s Flash in the wind / rain / hail / snow in the depths of winter for three, maybe four days solid .............one is bound to fly in front of you at some point !
So here we go me and Alan warford need Bittern so if any one has any info please pass it on as and when, I also need Marsh tit they must be out there somewhere lets us know where you saw them last.. What do you need,or what would you like to see go on ask on here or send private e-mail, lets get everyone out there looking for something For as you look for the small ones you will find the biggy, last year in the north east someone had a Siberian Rubythroat in there garden know theres a bird I would run for.. have fun keep birding and share your thoughts
