8am - 12 Noon. Dark Grey Cloud, Still, Showers, 14c.

44 Species spotted: Including:

1 Hobby. (Dip).
1 Little Grebe.
7 Meadow Pipit.(heading West)
1 Kestrel.
1 Water Rail. (Canal near stables).
1 Willow Warbler.
2 Jay.
5 Teal.
1 Pochard.
50+ Swallow. (in 2 flocks heading South East).
230+Starling. (180+ heading South).
40+ Finches (at feeders, mainly Goldfinch, amongst, Chaffinch, Greenfinch, Blue + Great tit, House Sparrow, Robin).
2 Great Black Backed Gull ( Irwell).
7 Lesser Black Backed Gull.
70+ Black Headed Gull. (Mainly Irwell).
8 Grey Heron.
1 Grey Wagtail.
6 Pied Wagtail.
23 Collared Dove.
12 Tufted Duck.
11 Mute Swan.
10 Great Crested Grebe.

7.30-9.30 a.m. 31 Cormorant present when I arrived, 7 Meadow Pipit and 8 Swallow over heading SW. 47 Swallow still using the wires around Crow Trees.

This a.m. with Malcolm, main birding interest was in the hedgerows with 23 Chiffchaff, 8 Willow Warbler and 1 Blackcap identified. Also at least 8 Jays seen. Approx 80 Swallows and 15 House Martin around Crow Trees.
Howard the feeders are next to the car park before the entrance to the sailing club.

This a.m. with Malcolm, on the res. 1 Shoveler of note, at the feeders a Sparrowhawk, on the river 2 Kingfisher and mainly around Crow Trees 90 Swallow, 16 House Martin and 7 Sand Martin. In the hedgerows 8 Chiffchaff, 2 Willow Warbler and 1 Blackcap and 10 Teal on pool by canal. 7 Meadow Pipit also.

06:00-10:50am A good day for ducks. 3 Pintail 1 flew in @ 06:20am then 2 dropped in near Capsticks only to leave west when a dog walker walked past as soon as they landed.(record shot attached ) 1 Garganey with 3 Wigeon dropped in for about 5 minutes. (distant record shot attached) 1 pochard (Record shot attached) amongst some Tufted Ducks. 45 Tufted Ducks. 9 Teal 5 on Res 4 in pool next to Canal. 3 Great Black backed Gulls having a go at the Wigeon & Garganey causing them to leave. 8 Herring Gulls 1 Kingfisher. 1 Snipe. 3 Meadow Pipits over. 75 Swallows over SE 22 House Martins over S 4 Sand Martins. 2 Willow Warblers. 3 Chiffchaff. 1 Whitethroat 1 Willow Tit at the feeders.. 1 Pheasant. 1 Sparrowhawk. This a.m. with Malcolm, 1 Peregrine (on pylon towards Bury), 1 Wheatear, 1 Meadow Pipit (both near pumphouse), 100+ House Martin and Swallow with 50 Sand Martin, 4 Swift. On the res. 1 Shoveler with a Sparrowhawk and Kestrel over. 1 Water Rail heard at canal near pool which had 3 Teal.

14:45-15:50p quick visit after work walked to the creek and back to the car park highlights.
3 Great black backed gulls 1 Adult 2 first winter.
1 Common Gull.
6 Spotted flycatchers in the creek.
Good sized very active tit/warbler flock in the creek making it hard to count with at least:
1 Willow Tit
7 Willow Warblers.
1 Chiffchaff.
9 Long tailed Tit.
6 Blue tit.

This a.m. with Malcolm, 2 Yellow Wagtail over(S), 12 Goosander(SW), 1 Kingfisher in front of sailing club, 1 Peregrine (pylon 20), 1 Common Tern, Water Rail heard at Capsticks and along canal where there were 6 Teal, 2 Willow Tit near Capsticks and large numbers of migrating Hirundines with 1 Swift. Also 1 Sparrowhawk and 1 Kestrel.

Very quiet morning with only 32 species noted. Modest highlights:

2 Common Tern.

Single Swift among a mixed flock of c60 Hirundines- mainly Swallow but both Martins present.

1 Stock Dove.

This a.m. with Steven, 1 Hobby, 1 Water rail, 1 Common Tern, 19 Tufted Duck, 1 Kingfisher and 1 Garganey still present in front of Sailing Club at 9.30 were the highlights. Much fewer hirundines present than yesterday.

The pattern of the bird's greater coverts leaves little doubt that it is male Mark but it is a juvenile at that.

7pm Garganey still present near the car park, being very viewable at very close proximity when no dog walkers are spooking the mallards that is smile

Am visit this morning in the Rain with Ian C was very Quite so returned this afternoon highlights.

1 Juv Merlin flushed by me from about 30ft giving good view as it flew away.( Wish I had seen it before almost walking into it.)

This morning partly with Ian C and then Malcolm

Bushes were a lot quieter than last week but there seemed to be a little wader movement which kept the interest up

15 Black-tailed Godwit flew SW down the Irwell Valley
11 Snipe also SW in one flock plus 5 on old hall Marsh
Lesser Whitethroat - canal at crow Trees Farm
2 Redstart (per Ian C) at Redstart hedge and the other in the Creek which I heard calling both thought that be juvs
4+ Blackcap
5+ Willow Warbler
2 Whitethroat
2 Great spotted Woodpecker
6 Teal
3 Common Tern
Common Buzzard
Tree Pipit heard calling over withins

My attempt to get out this afternoon which I didn't quite Finnish my round. highlights;

Juvenile grey wagtail close
2 buzzards (one suprising brief very close encounter from a usually busy footpath)
Green sandpiper (Very brief)
Garganey near the car park
Common tern
Whitethroat heard
