Altrincham Golf Course and KingGeorgeV pool. Lots of birdsong today, even a Woodpecker drumming on a few occasions, on this beautiful, mild and sunny morning. Over 20 species including 4 Goosander, Redwing, Jay, Bullfinch and Greenfinch.
Little Egret now on the island at KingGeorgeV pool. About 20 Goldfinch in one Alder and about 15 Redwing in the next tree. One drake Goosander, 2 Song Thrush and a chirpy little Wren.
Rob. Could the duck be Swedish Blue? I'm no expert on birds; but there is a distict similarity. I saw it again on the Pond at Timperley Nature Reserve 2 days ago. Swimming up and down and very vocal, in a group of Mallards, looking lost. I'm not on Facebook but apparently others have seen it and posted about it. It has a striking scaly appearance on its back. Maybe try Facebook West Timperley Nature Reserve?
Still lots of Redwing, about 40, moving from tree to tree as you walk round KingGeorgeV pool, and on the field. No Fieldfare, but there were 2 Mistle Thrush.
6 Goosander on KingGeorgeV pool (5m, 1f). And a duck I didn't recognise...perhaps a hybrid? Medium to dark grey on top and sides, white throat and breast. And an unusual scaly sort of appearance especially on top. White bits just behind the bill. Very vocal, swimming up and down like it was looking for its mate. Any Ideas?
Alty Golf Course and King George V pool 2 p.m. Lots of species including 1 Bullfinch, 2 Siskin and several viewings of Nuthatch, Treecreeper, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Jay, Long Tailed Tits etc. Lots of Goldfinch. Not seen the 3 Juvenile swans for a while. Gadwall and Pochard seem to have gone.

15.00 p.m. 3 Gadwall on King George V pool, Pochard gone. One Great Spotted Woodpecker in a tree while another flew past. 1 Chaffinch.1 Heron overlooking 4 Cormorants. 8 Ring Necked Parakeets on one tree with one checking out the holes. One Nuthatch, dozens of Goldfinch. 17 Parakeets just flew over making a right racket as I write this.
Today a flock of pink footed geese heard at 0850, then later about 120 - 130 seen to the south of Whitebeam Close, flying SE about 10:00 ish, in a 'V', quite high and purposeful.

35 Pink Footed Geese about half mile south of Whitebeam Close, Timperley at c.1.40 pm west into the gale, were quite straggly and low and didn't look particularly committed tbh.

What sounded like a decent-sized flock of Pink Footed Geese flew over Whitebeam Close at 10:00. Didn't see them unfortunately, perhaps they were directly overhead.

At a site in Timperley (that I am unable to disclose) today 2 Yellow-legged Gulls (adult & 3rd summer) feeding with a few Lesser Black-backed, a Herring and a few Black-headed Gulls.
This site has also regularly (almost daily) been a feeding ground for a family of up to 5 Ravens (2 adults & 3 young) for a few weeks now. - mostly likely the family that nested on the large communications tower locally earlier this year.
13May21 6.30 p.m. West Timperley Nature Reserve. A Chiffchaff landed not 2m away and sang just to me...wonderful. Then a Great Spotted Woodpecker (M) flitted between branches before crawling up a tree and then hiding. Swan still sitting patiently waiting for her eggs to hatch. Grey wagtail etc.
A Stock Dove was "singing" in Fairywell Wood last week.
House Sparrows are coming to a feeder, and looking for insects on Whitebeam Close after 27 years observation! Wonder if a new nest site has become available.

Mon 03May21, 7.40 p.m. The Pond by Timperley canal (Just been re-named on Google maps to 'West Timperley Nature reserve'). 1 x Snipe patiently waited 10m away for 10 mins while I got a great view.
1 x raven flying over the post office depot building
Thanks for this info. First chance I've had to follow this up, the Raven nest is on the telecomms tower nearby!
Been wondering if they're nesting in the area since seeing one last March!

A Mandarin Duck flew over the end of Whitebeam Close and Fairywell Wood calling at 5pm, presumably following the Brook. Timperley tick I think.

Wed 21Apr2021. 6.45 p.m. Next to the Secret Garden, Alty Golf range. Jay in the same tree. Great Spotted Woodpecker. Gadwall seem to have left KingGeorgeV pool.
Sat 17Apr2021, 3.30 p.m. The Pond, next to the Canal, Timperley (opp The Bridge Apartments), 2 x Jays sitting on a branch 3 m away for 2 mins, Coot and chicks, Swan persistently chasing off a Canada Goose who was not having any of it, nesting Mute Swan on the adjacent bog/water which has been heavily pruned with new nest boxes. 2 Wrens and a Goldcrest, and some kind of wader.
Thursday 15Apr2021. 2.30 p.m - Next to Alty Driving range, Jay, Treecreeper, Greenfinch (and hear a Woodpecker). Then at 6.30 p.m at KingGeorgeV pool, Gadwall x 2, Coot with 6 chicks. After scanning the trees, by the pool for 30 mins hearing the drumming of a Woodpecker I was rewarded with a glimpse as it flew over me and landed on a tree over the Brook. My first clear view of a Great Spotted Woodpecker where it drummed in full view for a few mins, and then again on the next slim tree for a few mins where again I got a great view. Wonderful!
A little scout of the local areas and some different sightings which was good!
1 x greenfinch in Stamford Park
1 x female house sparrow near the post office depot
Starling feeding on the park
2 x nuthatch
1 x little egret on the pool and 1 flying over
Several great tit...all looking very fine!
1 x grey wagtail on the Brook
2 x ring-necked parakeet
2 x jay in the den behind the driving range
The great spotted woodpecker heard and seen VERY briefly. But there were a few men on trucks getting in my way. I assume they are getting ready to open the golf course...ugh.
A family of long-tailed tit on the field approaching the golf course
And my second month of chasing a great spotted woodpecker and I FINALLY pinned it down to a tree behind the driving range so extremely chuffed with that. I didn't get the best view but still pleased!
1 x coal tit in the same area
1 x song thrush
1 x cormorant diving on the pool
1 x wren on the Brook heard but only fleetingly seen
A windy and soggy walk from home over to Stamford Park and King George V pool.
The headache I developed in the cold was soon forgotten when I got my first kingfisher of the year on the smaller pond in Stamford Park. Showed really well and I was able to watch for ten minutes, while it scanned the pond. And what a joy to have one so close to home!
Other highlights were;
1 x cormorant on King George V pool
1 x pied wagtail
1 x grey wagtail
1 x raven flying over the post office depot building
A day off work and had a wander over to Stamford Park, the King George V pool and golf course. Bit slow initially but as it warmed up had some enjoyable spots!
2 x treecreeper in Stamford Park
1 x song thrush in full voice on the pool
2 x nuthatch on the feeder
1 x grey wagtail on the Brook
A great spotted woodpecker drumming away on the golf course. I was confident I had pinned him down near the driving range. But before I was able to see anything, the drumming moved to the other side!
And a robin was following me round the pool, chattering away to me. So just out of curiosity, I held out my hand and he flew over but didn't quite land! But he did continue to follow me until I went into the golf course.
A female Blackcap was at the junction of Whitebeam Close and Alder Drive, I think she'd been feeding on crab apples.

Incredibly flooded around King George V pool and I couldn't make it onto the field behind. Although, I could hear a HUGE flock of starling but couldn't see them.
However, saw 1 x male pochard. Which I haven't seen here before.
