Audenshaw Reservoirs 11th May 2007
05.40-07.00
Light Rain Lt Westerlies

At least 7 Dunlin
Common Sandpiper
3 Wheatear
8 Whimbrel
Greenshank

6 of the Whimbrel were on No3 when I arrived, on far bank. Making my way to the causeway just to be 100% I disturbed a Greenshank on No2. The Greenshank settled further down the bank and the second time it took to flight two more Whimbrel flew with it. The 8 Whimbrel flew off north at 06.20.

The Greenshank was still calling around No2 as I left at 07.00

Started off with one Dunlin over No1, been around for several days. Three landed on No2, bank nearby as I was sheltering in the hide. As I got back to where the corner of the path overlooks all three reservoirs I spotted a flock of seven flying low over No2.

Didn't want to come off but work calls. Hoping to get back this afternoon

I found the two Mallard on No2 at 15:00, but no sign of the Garganey.

Three Wheatear were on the walls around the central hub, plus two Pied Wagtails. There were a dozen or so Swifts over and similar numbers of Swallow, but no martins. A Little Ringed Plover was on the banks of No2, as were 20 or so Goosander.

It felt as though it should have been a good Black Tern day, so I popped into Audenshaw at about 15:15.

Regrettably, I was mistaken: not a tern to be seen. A couple of Wheatears (1m) was the best spot. Swifts were back: about 15 or so, quite high over No3. Six Swallows and a couple of Sand Martins added to the spring feel. Remnants of winter were 24 Goosander and 28 Great Crested Grebe. Gulls were well down since my last visit: maybe 12 or so Lesser Black-backed and 20 Black-headed.

Hi Tom

Nothing to add to Andrew below other than an Oystercatcher at midday. Also the Diver has still got wire in its mouth. It seems to be able to keep it in its mouth most of the time but I saw a line of it fall out after it resurfaced. Rob and Sonia saw it yesterday as well.

The Great Northern Diver was back on No2 when I visited at 11:45.

Apart from half a dozen passing Meadow Pipits there was nothing remotely spring-like.

A flock of about five small dinghies on No3 was a personal lifer for Audenshaw.
