Lots of little ponds at the airport made for GC Newts when the new runway was opened a few years back. The Canadas love them but the airport staff don't love the Canadas and I suspect they get "controlled" there - fair enough, we don't want a crash!

purely speculation of course, but I think perhaps your 50 geese were more likely to be Canadas? Given the time of the sighting and their direction of flight, they seem more likely than Pink-feet, I'm also assuming (probably wrongly) that they were low enough for you to be able to count them at that time of night, which would all be more characteristic of Canada Geese.
I was walking home from my parents house in Wythenshawe tonight, when I saw at least 50 geese overhead at approximately 8.30pm heading towards Manchester Airport.
I wondered if they were Pink footed Geese and judging by the previous comments it looks now likely that they would have been.
Not too sure if Canada Geese fly at night but it was a bit dark to tell them apart.
As you say, possibly going to Martin Mere for a re-fuelling before heading up to the Inner Solway. I think Tom mentioned something to this effect in an earlier post.
I also heard them about that time and I also jumped up, scrambled to get the keys, unlocked the door and RAN outside. By this time I could still hear them faintly but sadly couldn`t see them !
EDIT - Forgot to mention that this was over Wigan.
Hi all, I have just been sitting in the living room reading, when I thought I heard a Pinkfoot outside I chose to ignore it thinking it was my imagination running wild.
However about 3 minutes after that I heard another one, so I jumped up out of the chair and ran into the front garden. It wasn't my imagination after all as a very vocal low flying flock came over. I manage to count 65+ all flying west.
