Having relatively recently relocated (work wise) to Kew in Southport I have resisted starting a thread but as the list of good birds continues to grow I've finally succumbed. So ignoring the 3 species of Owl (including 2 from my office window). I'd thought I'd start with todays sightings: Male Ring O...
Getting my Friday bacon butty this morning, I got chatting with the butty van couple and they know I do conservation work. They described seeing birds in their Worsley garden...like blue tits but smaller and with a bright red crest. I asked if it could have been orangey rather than red but they were ada...
Sad account of habitat destruction, in the name of conservation, relating to Red Rocks NR. Article attached to the Dee Estuary website, and well worth a read. -- Edited by John Williams on Thursday 24th of April 2014 09:29:04 PM
Yesterday I found a downed racing pigeon at Chorlton Ees while failing to find any more star migrants on a walk from Chorlton WP. I took its ring details through my scope. It was a Royal Pigeon Racing Association bird which have leg rings beginning GB. I discovered the best site for reporting lost pigeo...

The UK countryside supports large numbers of several thrush species through the winter. The Winter Thrushes Survey aims to find out more about their numbers and distribution, and the resources that they need to survive to spring and the next breeding season. Are we good hosts to these birds? What ar...

They told me that the trust had bought that piece of land (approx 8 hectares). They are going to encourage the land to return to natural bog and some work is going to start soon, no...

The new 2011 Greater Manchester County Bird Report is out now! The Report Production Team genuinely appreciates the patience and understanding of county birders in the time it has taken to produce the 2011 County Bird Report. It has taken some considerable time and more considerable effort for the...

Over the last few weeks I have seen Goldcrest, Blue & Great Tits, Dunnock, Chiffchaff, Robin etc, either with beaks full of nesting material or insects. The breeding season is upon us, especially for our resident birds. With all this new life appearing, or about to, I was horrified to industrial...

I took up photography about 2 years ago so i still have a lot to learn but that is all part of the fun. I joined the forum to hopefully find some good local bird hid...
Is anyone listening to Jeremy Vine on BBC Radio2 right now? Apparently a male Mute Swan is targeting ethnic minority students at Warwick University. I've never heard such rubbish. Have they never thought that it might just be by chance that the majority of students passing the Swan's territory just...
Check out YouTube: The Natural Beauty of the Manchester/Salford Mosses Chris Packham didn't have a window, so we had to make do with Beethoven providing the soundtrack

Also included Houghton Green Pool in the survey. Full results will be on the PCHG Facebook site but highlights were: 1 Dunlin, 2...
From the early stages of planning the Bird Atlas book it was apparent that we couldn't include all of the maps for all of the species and we intended to produce an online resource in the future. We made reference to this in the book on page 150 but we have since changed the name! On Tuesday the BTO will be lau...

Today's sudden announcement of a major enhancement to Birdtrack, was something of a pleasant surprise though I did find it a little strange that the BTO chose April Fool's Day to make the annoucement (though in fairness, recent editions of the BTO magazine indicated that such an enhancement was in p...
