I know many county birders have enjoyed excursions to Worlarby Carrs in Lincolnshire, mainly for its rather huge wintering raptor population (think over 20 Short-eared Owls at any one time in winter!). It seems this site is now seriously under thread and with it the loss of an extremely (nationally...

During January the BTO are running a survey to find out more about our wintering Blackcaps in gardens. If you are lucky enough to see them in your gardens in the new year then it would be useful to add your observations to their database. More below - http://www.bto.org/volunteer-surveys/gbw/about...
We need an excellent all-round person, who wants to experience working in a large team, on one of the RSPB's newest nature reserves. This is a varied and challenging volunteer role experiencing environmental tourism and visitor services. You'll be helping with the planning, delivery, promotion...
Yesterday in the Garden I watched a Great Spotted Woodpecker preening in a very strange way. It struck me as adopting a Woodpecker Yoga position! The photo I took (link below) was admittedly very poor, however in it you could make out its feet either side of the head - it was hanging upside down from curv...

The great thing about birding is now I never get bored on those long journeys on the motorway. Every time I make a list of any birds of prey I see, and compare the results with my previous long journeys. Here is my list after crossing the whole of England from Manchester to the South-East: (It was raining q...
I was out birding along the Peak Forest Canal towpath between Hyde and Dukinfield this morning, when the canal towpath gave way. The ground literally opened up and attempted to swallow me! Fortunately I was able to get away, but I looked at the hole and it appeared as if the soil had eroded near the roots...
