Posted this elsewhere too, but value the views of people on here, so here goes. Particularly interested if Doc has a view. Also, please consider I am fortunate enough to own three of the so called 'Alpha's' so this isn't me just having a pop at people with top end optics...if you see what I mean. At the Bri...
In nearly 2 hours today on Ludworth Moor I saw only a single White sp. a few Meadow Browns and 2 Gatekeepers. On my garden Buddleia I have had just 1 Small Tortoiseshell and 1 Red Admiral all week. Where are all the Whites and Small Tortoiseshells this year? Has anyone else noticed a lack of common butterf...

Apparently a Minnesota dentist named Walter Palmer has now expressed regret at recently hunting and killing Cecil ( a celebrated and magnificent lion who delighted many visitors to a park/reserve in Zimbabwe); - he thought it was "legal." Oh well then, you didn't realise what you were d...

This morning at around 9:40 I saw a cat trying to catch a mouse but the mouse was in perfect health so I ran over hissing at the cat to get away which was then I was advised by someone over the road to leave the cat alone. The mouse hid under a car and was followed by the cat. I then was told by the person it was natu...

The Gull looke...
After seeing my first yellow wagtail in Britain and I have gained a great fondness for this bird and I was wondering if there was anywhere less then 30 minutes from Chorlton to get good close up views of this bird as I understand they are in decline and I would like to see them close up before I have to go real...
I have been offered this site as a part of the wider butterfly count initiative. On the map it looks totally inaccessible bounded, as it is, by two railway lines and the M60. It's on a steep hill and there are no access paths at all. I'm intrigued! Has anyone ever been to this site? SJ9094
An extraordinary sighting of a bat flying around the gorge where the Goyt flows under the bridge at the bottom of the slope (driving into the Lakes). It was sunny, and it was 4.30 p.m! Didn't appear to be a pipistrelle (too large), and appeared two-tone (although this may have been due to light shining t...
I just had an idea for a challenge: how many species can you ID in a day if you go the Gilbert White road and leave ALL your gear at home? Anyone up for it?

Not a birding holiday but I was expecting to see a few things of interest. As it turned out I only saw two new species for me. Yellow-legged Gull and Alpine Swift. Whilst enjoying a cheeky pint in the Black Swan pub beer garden in Hollins Green this evening I was amazed to see a Kingfisher sat on a wire fence across the duck pond in the pub grounds! I was alerted initially by it's call. It flew off after a few seconds.
On a recent family holiday to the island I managed half a day at the S'Albufera Des Grau Natural Park (28/08/14), the park has good facilities and seems very well run (the trail maps and instructions given at the information centre were first rate), birds seen; Little Grebe ( I can honestly say I've nev...
Just got back at 10.30 from a late afternoon visit with Phil Owen to Brandon Marsh in Warwickshire - we left Hale at 3pm and arrived at the reserve at 6.30 after taking one and a half hours to cover the last three miles of the M6 down to J2. More operations are planned for later in the summer, so please keep reporting any in...
