Had my first proper trip to Mull at Whit.
Stayed in a cottage attached to The Pennyghael Hotel - Loch Scridain and its wildlife visible from all rooms bar the toilet - highly recommended.
Caught up with most of the specialities, White-tailed Eagles seen at two sites including one nest site visibl...
Well, I have to say that my week in Spain was quite dissapointing from a bird point of view. I normally manage to eek out a bit of birding from a family holiday but this time I failed completely.
I did see birds (of course) but other than the ubiquitous Serins and Yellow legged Gulls, well I might as well h...
Had a ride up the Cat & Fiddle as it was nice and sunny.
Short-eared Owl hunting over the moors by Derbyshire Bridge. 3 Ring Ouzels by Danebower Chimney, only saw 1 Red Grouse and no Golden Plover :(
So, all those entering the monthly marathon, how did your first day go???
Not being the over energetic sort I decided a nice saunter to Horrocks hide would help kick the month off and at least i managed Black Tern and Little Gull. Overall managed a not too bad......nah. That would be telling (and pote...
Osprey over Heaton Park at 8:40pm this evening. Took a stroll from tram stop through park on way home and saw it flying through the centre of the park Northwards. I lost it behind trees then paced toward the reservoir, but no sign of it there and lots of kids were knocking about on the banks.
Look out at El...

Five buzzards were circling together and calling at 10-30 this morning over Hall Lane, near Haigh Lower Plantations. Is it too early for family groups? Another, possibly one of the above, was over Pendlebury Lane earlier while, at the same time, a common tern, was apparently foraging over fields ne...
A Hobby last night north of Arnfield Reservoir at Lees Hill. It was sat on fenceposts and also present late last week. There's also been a Red Kite over this area three times recently, but I don't think it's quite straggled over the border into Manc yet.
Cleared the shed of junk today and revealed what i think is a Bumble Bee "nest". It's a pile of dried leaves which was tucked away in the far corner. Although i don't think i've caused to much disturbance, it is now very exposed. I only saw 1 rather large bee frantically rearanging things aft...

A trip down south today involved a motorway journey from Manchester to Windsor near London and what better way of keeping a 10 year old passenger happy than involving him in a 'motorway bird list' Of course son and I shared the spoils and often avioded multiple pile-ups as I gazed up at passing raptors b...

This time i stayed for the afternoon and even though the wind was keeping alot of the birds down it was still a good day. Avocet, Linnet, ruddy duck, dunlin, Garga...

3 Lapwings have currently taken residence in a farmers field over the hills near Hindley Prison close to where me and Ryan Speakman live. We went earlier on this evening and were surprized to see them presumably nesting along side horses. I am unsure if this is normal behaviour for Lapwings as i am a new...

This year a number of Tree Sparrows have been colour ringed in Greater Manchester as part of a project to follow the movements and life span of individual birds. We would be grateful if birders could keep and eye out for any colour ringed birds and report them to Dr. Steve Christmas at se.christmas@ntl...
On the 2nd visit of my TTV SJ59Z today I found an Spotted Flycatcher in the woodland that's grown up in this old works, abandoned 30 yrs ago, also a Lesser Whitethroat was singing nearby. After chatting with other GM birders today, reading some other posts on here, and after what has been a cracking weekend in the county in general I started wondering if there is anyway of comparing how good GM is as a 'Birders County'.
I dont mean for an overall species list, because I'm guessing we wo...
