Has anyone noticed the BOU have proposed describing a new subspecies of Raven, Corvus corax piephagus based on dietary and habitat differences from the nominate race of a nesting pair observed, but not collected (yet), in Greater Manchester?
Cracking day with great views of Penduline Tit, Cirl Buntings, Surf Scoter, Hooded Merganser and Spoonbill. A full account and pics can be seen on my blog A Tale of 2 Halves.

From the canal bridge on School Lane late on this afternoon watched a female Sparrowhawk chasing a Buzzard across the fields. The Buzzard didn't seem unduly bothered just perched up on a telegraph pole with the Sparrowhawk on the next one along. I have never seen this behaviour before - anyone else? A...

Does this bird actually exist?, probably as other people admit to seeing it. Now I'm not bothered about seeing one, but a frustrated builder(birder I know)would really like to see one this weekend. I've been forced, against my own free will, to visit Moore nature reserve for the last two weekends, on...
Checked out Tyldesley Cemetery Rookery this afternoon.
23 nest occupied. Not sure if this Rookery already been posted.
Great entertainment watching the rooks stealing twigs from each others nest.
Cheers Ian.
I am pleased to announce that we fitted a Peregrine nest tray to the N side of the clock tower yesterday (facing Packer Street). It is on the balcony but can be seen with bins from the parking area, through the spaces in the balustrade. I would imagine there could be good views from the hillside nearby whe...

Had the female Lesser Spotted Woodpecker again late this afternoon.

Again between 1500-1700hrs, sadly still no male to be seen, yet!
Cheers Ian
Well technically a bolt!
My mounting plate shoe bit on my scope has lost a bolt, well some time ago now, but i have only just got round to trying to sort it out!
Its not the big bolt which you can screw back with a coin, but a smaller one around 5-6mm diameter. Anyone know any optical shops that sell them,...
Bit of birding around Speyside, weather changeable to say the least and a bit early for most things but still not a bad couple of days.
Highlights - a female Capercaillie stood on the track at Forest Lodge for several minutes, summer plumage Black-throated Diver on Lochindorb, Crested Tit in Abern...
Dear All,
A Large area of Heaton Park is under threat from the development of a sports facility by a private firm. Heaton Park is a Grade II Listed Public Park, yet little effort appears to have been made in consulting the tax paying public, users of the park or those that record the natural history wit...

Just a gentle reminder to the newer members of the forum (and some older members as well) that the Manchester Birding Forum is just one small part of the Manchester Birding WEBSITE.
There is a wealth of information ranging from bird ID issues, birding sites within Greater Manchester, trip reports...
Just returned from Etherow Country Park where at 3.15, unbelievably, a swift started to hawk over the water of Compstall mill lodges. I watched it for the next 15 minutes when it was almost continually in sight at ranges down to about 30 meters. I was waiting for it to drop low enough to be able to pick out...
Been laughing out loud recently reading Bill's and now Geoff's posts containing more and more imaginative use of emoticons. Love it. Waiting to see which of the gentlemen will be first to compose a complete post containing emoticons only!, is there an emoticon for "king of the emoticons?&quo...
