Howdy folks - anyone know if this bird's okay?
My wife and I were walking along the canal (Monday 8th April, 2009, approx. 16:30) and saw this poor fellow on the water, he'd got his head and neck stuck in one of those plastic/acrylic 'four pack' beer ring-thingies - and although not appearing injured...
Sue and I are thinking of a trip to Norfolk at the end of September or early October. We usually got in a Travelodge - cos it's cheap - but were wondering if there would be any interest in getting a shared cottage with some other Manchester birders? Cost would work out at about £100 each for accommodation f...

Just been on the RSPB loch Garton site where they radio tracked the 2 fledged chicks from last year. One flew out into the Atlantic and died, the other successfully migrated to West Africa where it has, probably, also recently died. How hard must it be for these birds, and then on top of all their natural...

I was sitting patiently on my bike at 08:15 this morning waiting for the lights at the Slade Lane / Stockport Road junction to change when, to my huge surprise, a Little Egret flew leisurely overhead. It was heading roughly south east, maybe in the direction of Reddish Vale.
Needless to say, I have ev...
Has anyone noticed the BOU have proposed describing a new subspecies of Raven, Corvus corax piephagus based on dietary and habitat differences from the nominate race of a nesting pair observed, but not collected (yet), in Greater Manchester?
Cracking day with great views of Penduline Tit, Cirl Buntings, Surf Scoter, Hooded Merganser and Spoonbill. A full account and pics can be seen on my blog A Tale of 2 Halves.

From the canal bridge on School Lane late on this afternoon watched a female Sparrowhawk chasing a Buzzard across the fields. Does this bird actually exist?, probably as other people admit to seeing it. Now I'm not bothered about seeing one, but a frustrated builder(birder I know)would really like to see one this weekend. I've been forced, against my own free will, to visit Moore nature reserve for the last two weekends, on...
Checked out Tyldesley Cemetery Rookery this afternoon.

Great entertainment watching the rooks stealing twigs from each others nest.
Cheers Ian.
I am pleased to announce that we fitted a Peregrine nest tray to the N side of the clock tower yesterday (facing Packer Street). It is on the balcony but can be seen with bins from the parking area, through the spaces in the balustrade. I would imagine there could be good views from the hillside nearby whe...
