This morning 09:15- 1030. 

     Pintail male, initially by railway bridge over the Irwell just south of burrs halt. Then relocated to stretch of canal by the duck/ fishing pond, happily being fed alongside a host of mallard.

walmersley side of the railway line.

 Bullfinch and greenfinch numbers good and very active.

tit flock ( blue, long tailed, great & coal ) also very active.

kestrel not active at all ,not even when the train passed.

20 x fieldfares over & 6x cormorants in formation.

highlight! A jack snipe on the footpath by the railway. It let 2x spaniels right past it before darting out next to my foot.

Family groups of blackcap, magpie, carrion crow & mallard. Willow warblers, long tailed tits & wren all active and calling.

onthe river, a family group of grey wagtails & dippers together (by accident probably). There was also a young dipper on its own, flipping stones over in the shallows by the railway bridge. 

By the weir were two young herons , and by spring side farm a young buzzard calling from the trees.

Two broods of mallard on the river above the weir 6 & 5 ducklings resp.

2x dipper feeding fledglings

1 x goosander flew up the river

3x grey wagtails

East side of the railway line (not strictly the park but more burrs than Walmersley )

By the side of the railway, near the cutting (waiting to watch the train). 2x whitethroat across the tracks near the caravans, a lesser whitethroat singing(and rasping) from inside the cutting. And a wood warbler flew into the bush next to me , 20 secs and flew off into the cutting. Couldn't follow it , £1000 fine to much even for a wood warbler and 80097 + seven coaches was a major deterrent!

Quick walk around this pm. Quite a few people about due to an event near the Brown Cow. Highlights 2 Dippers near the Bridge, 2 Grey Wagtails near the waterfall and a male Blackcap

Monday evening sun

On the river

3 dippers, 2 adults and a fledgling being fed, near the railway bridge

Another dipper near the weir (different male on overnight watch)

2 grey wagtails near waterfall off farmers field

Not on river.... but for the first time in Burrs CP

2 rooks being vocal next to 5 nests ( does this make a rookery?)

Yesterday at dusk

1 Kingfisher(at last) flew upstream and landed on the tree which is in the river just above the weir.

It stayed perched long enough for me to id as a male.(black lower mandible) But sadly no camera.

2 goosander(m & f) upstream of weir.

1 dipper near railway bridge.

150+ jackdaw flying noisily south.

On the Irwell

4 pairs of Dippers at different spots

3 goosanders - adult pair upstream of the weir, single juvenile (or female)

On the flooded field on the other bank from the weir best viewed from the top of the steps on the path going upstream of the weir

12 teal

2 oystercatchers

16 lapwing

Herons catching frogs

On Derby farm field

2 mistle thrush ( no winter thrushes)

5 meadow pipit

4 pied wagtail

2 lapwing (one on the ground, the other bombing interested magpies )

Various locations river bank, trees near pub, canal aqueduct,  & garden collecting moss

On the farmers field on the opposite side of the weir

3 unidentified waders(too far away) and 6 small ducks(probably teal) in the flooded fields

10 Herons hiding from the snow in the trees below the heronry

Today 11/3.

Derby Farm field, 8 lapwing.

Flying over river, little egret(not previously seen by me around Burrs).

Circling overhead,1 Buzzard.

Garden highlight, goldcrest.

Other sign of spring, frogs started spawning yesterday, 4 days later than last year delayed by the beast.

Post beast. Derby farm field. 20 redwing. 8 lapwing. 3 mistle. 2 meadow lark. 5 pied Wagtail. River Irwell. 1goosander( female). Dipper. On frozen pond. Heron in breeding plumage fishing the edges. Flying over at dusk . 200+ jackdaw heading south, where do they roost?

Derby farm field next to the Garsdale. 

3 lapwing this morning, one was flying around, calling(peewit), and fighting off 2 jackdaw in flight.

5 pied wagtails.

No winter thrushes at all.

3 mistle thrush.

On river Saturday 24/2.

Glimpse of a kingfisher north of the weir (spotted last 2 days). 

Dipper in the rapids near railway bridge(spotted most days)

Heronry at dusk, 12 herons seemed to be sat on nests, with other herons perched around.

Notable on garden feeders next to Burrs.

2 Nuthatch.

Goldcrest.

Derby farm field. 28 lapwing. Only 3 Fieldfare, no redwings today. Have they started to go home? None yesterday. Great spotted woodpecker on the top of ash trees next to Kadant factory .

Once you have climbed the small hill behind the caravan park, look towards 325°NNW to see the nesting herons. Today there were 7 nests occupied, presumably with eggs being incubated, with other herons sat or flying around. Memorable others On the river 2 male dippers fighting for territory 5 goosanders Grey wagtail Cormorant In the trees on the river banks Treecreeper Goldcrest On the garden feeders 2 nuthatch

From yesterday walk from Burrs to Summerseat over to Greenmount and back down the Kirklees Trail.
Lot of people out throwing things for dog, and the dogs themselves, into the River Irwell and various lodges. In some cases this was accompanied by a fast waving of arms and loud shouts of 'here fido.' The result was that most birds had decamped from Burrs and the lodges of the Kirklees.

Nonetheless between Burrs and Summerseat
Two Kingfisher flying south and north out of Burrs. towards Summerseat Two Nuthatch, two pairs of Goosander, Chiffchaff, Dipper, Lapwing, Curlew, Singing Goldcrest, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Pheasant,

Greenmount
several Fieldfare, meadow pipit,

Kirklees trail Nuthatch
