Canada Goose (c150) - the most I've ever seen at the site. Great Crested Grebe (2 ad) Lesser Black-backed Gull (1 ad) Swift (5+) Whitethroat (1m) Willow Warbler (1m)
Lesser Whitethroat singing at the river by the metal gate to the tip at 5.15pm then flew across the river to the substation area and started singing from bush along the upper river bank.
Wander round in the rain today 10.44 - c12.45, highlights as follows:
Swift (1) over Kenworthy Bridge at 12.35 - my earliest patch record by a week! Mute Swan (5, 3 ad, 2 imm) Tufted Duck (10, 7m) Black-headed Gull (1 imm) Herring Gull (1 imm) Great Spotted Woodpecker (1) Treecreeper (1m) singing in trees along the south bank of the river. Swallow (15+) Sand Martin (15+) House Martin (5+) Willow Warbler (1m) singing on Barlow Tip. Whitethroat (1m) singing on Barlow Tip. Reed Bunting (3m)
Another nice walk around this morning 09.55 - 11.50, highlights as follows:
Mute Swan (3, 1 ad, 2 imm) Tufted Duck (16, 9m) a really large count for this late in the year. Cormorant (1) Black-headed Gull (1 imm) Lesser Black-backed Gull (1) Herring Gull (2) Sand Martin (10+) House Martin Swallow (5+) Nuthatch (2) Willow Warbler (1m) singing on Barlow Tip. Whitethroat (1m) singing on Barlow Tip. Reed Bunting (3, 2m)
I had a look this evening for the lesser whitethroat in the area described by Chris and Simon but with no luck. Saying that you couldn't hear any other bird for the song thrush belting it out. Blackcap in the area and displaying Greenfinches. Buzzard over the golf course, 2 kestrel and a sparrowhawk over Hardy Farm earlier in the day.
Chris Chandler posted this on another thread earlier but this thread includes Kenworthy Woods so I've copied it across for the continuity:
"Morning walk with Simon Gough along the Mersey (9.30 - 12pm).
Pretty drab conditions - heavy drizzle throughout and mist hanging over the river. We crossed over the river by the Water Park and followed the opposite bank up to Jackson's Boat.
The plan was to check for Common Whitethroat in the area round the electricity substation, as I've seen them here in previous years. After scouring the dense brambles in the area for several minutes, we were surprised by a sudden burst of Lesser Whitethroat song and the bird showed for a few seconds before flying further down the river. We followed it to a cordoned off area with several 'Caution - Japanese Knotweed' signs. The bird stayed in this area, but out of sight for around 40 minutes. By this stage the rain was pretty persistent and only the brief bursts of song let us know it was still there.
Eventually the rain let up and the bird began singing almost continuously and afforded us several much better views. I've seen Lesser Whitethroat on this section of the river before, but it was great to find one ourselves and made up for an otherwise grim morning!
No Common Whitethroat along the river, though we did see one later at Hardy Farm.
Also seen:
Lots of Blackcap Chiffchaff Ring-Necked Parakeet Grey Wagtail Buzzard Great Spotted Woodpecker "
1 willow warbler 4 chiffchaff 6 blackcap 30+ sand Martin 3 house martin 2 swallow 4 ring-necked parakeet 2 reed bunting 2 bullfinch 3 redwing 2 grey wagtail & 2 Goosander on the river. Sat in my car in the car park having a brew before the walk around & heard some tapping on my rear window, looked in my rear view mirror to see a long tailed tit sat on my wiper, must of been picking at insects
On the walk from the tram stop at Sale WP: buzzard and cormorant at Jackson's Boat, grey wagtail further along the river and a lesser redpoll on Barlow Tip.
This was ringed as a moulting adult female on 25/6/2016 at Ambleside, Windermere.
Many thanks for the sighting
Steve
Just had an e-mail from the ringers to confirm this information, but also of interest, this is the first of the birds they've ringedat Windermere to be seen in Greater Manchester (this individual had previously been seen in Nosterfield, North Yorkshire).
It's also my own first record of this species for CWP, too.
Fem/imm Red-breasted Merganser showing well adjacent to the island on the east side of Chorlton Water Park from 4:30pm-5pm when it flew west also 14 Pochard (12 drakes 2 females)
Balls. Day off today for a wild merganser hunt; here in the morning, when there was no sign, left to have a look on Sale Water Park (via Barlow Tip, etc), where it also wasn't, then a quick scurry back up here before light failed, which would have been just after five; I must have missed it by minutes. I bet it flew back to Sale, too. Probably laughing.
Anyway. Here from about 9.30 - 11.30; much of the lake frozen, which made counting easier than it normally is here:
1 nuthatch heard 5+ house sparrow 2 siskin 2 greenfinch 2 bullfinch 1 grey wagtail 2 song thrush 4 moorhen 28 coot 7 gadwall 18 tufted duck 11 or 12 pochard (1 female, with another probable female tucked away amongst vegetation, too obscured to confirm) 12 mute swan 4 or 5 great crested grebe 216 black-headed gull 9 common gull 4 lesser black-backed gull 2 herring gull
Fem/imm Red-breasted Merganser showing well adjacent to the island on the east side of Chorlton Water Park from 4:30pm-5pm when it flew west also 14 Pochard (12 drakes 2 females)

the Greylag Goose with a neck band sounds interesting, pleased try robert.swann@homecall.co.uk for information as it sounds possibly like one of theirs?
Cheers,
Ian
Hi Ian,
I reported it to the BTO's ring-recovery page, so hopefully it should get through to him via that.

Hour here before dark today. No red-breasted merganser for me, but here's what I did note:
1-2 or more grey wagtail, plenty of activity around the little reed bed, where I've sen them congregate before, but never more than one at a time. 8 moorhen 33+ coot 17 gadwall 18+ tufted duck 12 pochard (one female) 2 goosander 1 greylag goose (with a red / dark orange neck-ring, SCZ) 10 mute swan 4 great crested grebe
Same as Pete Hines post, plus a couple of Siskin in a mixed flock of Tits feeding on the Alders at Barlow Tip and a Kestrel on the boundary with the golf course. No Merganser . Nice to see Steve Almond.
A quick lap of the lake with David Morris from around 12-13.00 today
We had the same stuff as Joel on the water, where a fair bit of ice was keeping the waterfowl from the northern shoreline. No small finches or similar seen but the highlight for me at least was a Woodcock whooshing by overhead, heading for Barlow Tip. Presumably it had been rudely disturbed by one of the seven million or so dogs being walked by the good burghers of Chorlton...
2:15pm - 3:00pm. A short scroll around the lake, very busy with people so not many birds seen other than what was on the lake. 6 pochards (all males) a pair or goldeneye 17 tufted ducks 2 cormorant 4 great crested grebes ~100 black-headed gulls ~15 common gulls 3 lesser black-backed gulls what looked like a dead gull on the ice around the reed bed
Mute Swan (10, 2 ad, 8 1w) Gadwall (2, 1m) Pochard (2m) Tufted Duck (c8m) Cormorant (4) GC Grebe (2) Herring Gull (2 ad) west over. Lesser Black-backed Gull (5 ad) four west and one south over. Stock Dove (3) west over the water park. Grey Wagtail (1)
