Tim. It was uncanny to see you on the day of the second record, although we knew nothing about it then. There was a group of volunteers cutting trees around the pond on Sat afternoon, although I think the bird had already flown by then. Had a look yesterday afternoon in terrible weather and again this morning. The pond is part of my morning patrol so will keep checking, though I can't spend long there. A colleague had seen the photo, it had been digi-binned and showed the upperparts clearly. Also today -
I checked that area on Sat pm hoping for a LSW but nothing there. The last bird actually stuck around for 4 days having been found by friends of mine the day before I got it on camera but it was gone by the morning of 1 Jan! this current visitor may still be around
Tim
PS only just got broadband and discovered from Judith the forum is where all the info exchange is going on.
A female L/Sp Woodpecker was photographed by the pond by a lucky unknown observer early afternoon, possibly around 13.35, which is when I walked passed him he didn't say owt, prob too busy grilling the pecker but apparently the bird soon flew flew off. I just found out this afternoon . I wonder what the chance is of a returning bird i.e. the female present at the same same spot from 28th to 31st Dec 2005 ? Which I didn't see either Photo of that bird by Tim Wilcox in the photo gallery.
Also yesterday.

The Tawny's have been roosting over at Kenworthy in some of the Poplars for at least the past 3 weeks. Thanks to the ridiculous levels of light pollution they're remarkably easy to observe. At dusk they seem to favour the area towards the gallops moving across to the rough grassland to the west of the Orchard between 6.30 and 7pm. Both birds seem to be faily vocal at the moment and tolerant of people. The female nearly took my head off walking out of the orchard last week !
A Tawny Owl, reported by fishermen on the north bank, was predating on mice coming to feed on spilt hemp seed behind their bivvies last night. 23 Tufted 4 LIttle Grebe 1 Goosander 1 Kingfisher perched on river bank 1 Blackcap yesterday 1 Redpoll " 12+ Siskin on 22nd

Ian the old 'tip road' through Kenworthy Woods is Willenhall Road. Those Kenworthy Lane dog control order signs along that road were erected at the wrong site ( nowt to do wi' me! ). Kenworthy Lane Woods are situated between Kenworthy Lane, Palatine Road and the M60 in Northendon on the other side of Princess Parkway at approx SJ827907.

Still quiet highlights of the past week have been 1 immature Buzzard on Pylon at Kenworthy earlier today 1 female Kestrel again over Kenworthy every day apart from 16/8. 1 very large Sparrowhawk on 16/8 22 Swift 17/8 1 Whitethroat daily apart from 18th and 19th 1 Blackcap 15th and 16th 1 Sedge 15th at least 4 GS Woodpeckers in the area lot of Jays around especially in the Orchard, some impressive groups of Long tailed tits for August and 1 possible Green Woodpecker heard near the parkway on the 15th.
Very few warblers left. 1 Whitethroat at Kenworthy 1 Sedge up at the substation 1 Willow at substation Still at least 1 Kestrel in the area but a lot more elusive than a few weeks back. Briefly had 3 up in the air together on the 29th. Main highlight of the past couple of weeks has been regular sightings of the resident foxes.
