RE: BTO Wetland Bird Survey

Thanks Nick, Ill ask Tim. I did think about just messaging him regarding it, just out of curiosity, but opted to put it on here in case anyone else knew much about it too. Cheers

Hi Dave,

Hope you are well.

I don't know the answer to your queries but Tim Wilcox (our local WeBS organiser) will. He may not catch this post so suggest you email him direct (his details are on the "Who's Who" page of the main website).

Cheers
Nick

On the BTO Wetland Bird Survey (WeBS) map of sites, three sectors of Chat Moss south of the railway are shown as vacant sites

https://app.bto.org/websonline/sites/vacant/vacant-sites.jsp#lon=-2.4290191&lat=53.4210760&zoom=11.243498631378229

An area named Little Woolden Moss LWT Reserve is one (though it covers an area up to the railway) and is listed as Lower Priority. Irlam Moss is another vacant sector, stretching from the fringe of Irlam north to Twelve Yards Road and is listed as High Priority. Barton Moss is a third sector, on the NE side of Irlam up to the boundary of Peel Green, including land north of Manchester City Airport (Barton Aerodrome in old money) - this is also listed as High Priority.

Is it known how long it has been since these were counted as part of WeBS? Does the Lower Priority status of the Little Woolden sector pre-date a lot of the works undertaken on the site since peat extraction ceased?

Presumably each sector has some difficulties in logistics of accessing/viewing areas for counts and also each sector would have vast areas of little to no significance in carrying out a WeBS count. I was just curious as to whether these areas have ever been counted as part of the survey or whether they warranted reviewing in terms of the areas covered and their priority status possibly reassessed?
