With regard to my previous post - I think I have narrowed it down to either an Orange Underwing - moth that I have seen many times but never impersonating a butterfly before, or a Light Orange underwing. This is where the apparent moth becomes even more perplexing as the pattern on the forewings suggests the former, whereas the patterning on the hind wings suggests the latter! I am guessing there will be the inevitable variations between the two species. The fact that the Light Orange Underwing supposedly is not found as far North as Milnrow suggests it is the Orange Underwing - but the hind wing pattern does not seem right to me. To confuse the issue still further, the Orange Underwing tends to fly and stay at treetop height (apparently) in Spring, whereas the Light Orange Underwing is more likely to come down to the ground in Spring. Any advances?
