Hi, Re. my post Fri Feb 1 2019 When I first posted on this topic (Stretford bird author John Maclair Boraston 1862-1923), in 2016 one reply said they had followed some of the places Boraston writes about in his Nature Tones and Under-tones (1905). I don't have the name of the correspondent but if they remember and are reading this could they tell me if they have pin pointed the wood that Boraston enters (page 165 last paragraph of that book). On page 164 he reaches the River Bolin and turns aside over a stile...I have tried (with 6 inch and 25 inch maps) in vain to pin point the wood. Thanks Stephen Heery
In March 2016 I asked the question does anyone know anything about John Maclair Boraston, a bird book author from Stretford. Wrote Nature's Tones and Undertones 1921. Wrote about birds around Stetford and beyond.
Well, if anyone is still interested I have found out. The 1911 census gives him as Buyer of Textiles, in the Export of Textiles industry.
This would account for the journeys he made to Brazil (four in all I think), with which Britain had a cotton trade and about Which he wrote in the Journal of the Manchester Geographical Society 1898 vol 14. He was a Greek scholar and wrote about the birds in Homer's writing which only an ornithologist and a Greek scholar could do.
Anyway, that all. Just thought I would round off my former posting.
