As we were passing through GM yesterday we took the opportunity to visit High Rid to pay homage to the Velvet Scoter. - Very pleased to enjoy 25 mins with it in quite mild viewing conditions. Checking through the Gulls, there was no sign of the previous days Mediterranean Gull.
The Scoter completed 24 days in GM yesterday; - is it the longest stayer ever by now? Either way, we wish it well as it has brought great pleasure to its many admirers.
Best Wishes to all,
M & B

October 2002 at the Wigan Flashes and I remember it particularly well as it was the year of my county year listing attempt and I was away in Cornwall when it turned up (and buggered off again)!
What a cracking bird this is and a candidate for GM bird of the year (with no disrespect intended for the Rose-coloured Starling) in view of the number of GM high listers who caught up with it. With some superb photos on the sightings threads, Im almost wishing that this would be a new GM species for me to justify the petrol involved in getting down there. The only one I ever saw in GM in the old days was a drake on Gorton Reservoirs some 40 years ago (Feb 1979), keeping company with a Red-necked Grebe (if my memory serves me correctly, - if not, the sightings there were very close together).
- No idea when or where was the last record in GM, any info on this please?
With just three weeks left for me in the current year, I live in hope that something in GM might yet turn up for me, (Santa, are you listening?)
Best Wishes,
Mike P.
