Hi Pete
Many thanks for your help!
I wasn't sure about the tail pattern, as my book doesn't show images of the juvenile, is it necessarily true that the barred pattern of the tail is not seen in savannah juvenile?
Also, for me the bird seemed to be a walking bird, legs far forward etc, which wouldn't fit great black-hawk. Do you know of any other species it could be? Or do you think the black-hawk is a good shout?

Many thanks again for your input....the raptors out here are difficult!
Also sorry for the late reply, very busy with research, and the internet is dodgy!

Hi everyone, yesterday I saw this hawk (I think!) in Gamboa, Panama. I was wondering if anyone could ID it. I think it's a juvenile great black-hawk, whereas a birder in Panama thinks it is a Savanna hawk.

It had horizontal dark brown streaking on the cream-coloured underside and a dark brown breast band (or the streaking was more thick on the breast). I have a few other photos so if a feature is missing I may have another photo which shows it.

Cheers!

Hi Tanmay,

The tail pattern fits Great Black Hawk,Savannah Hawks do not have that tail pattern.

Cheers Pete
