Ah right, the SJ reference put the pointer behind the school.
Failing that Tim, there still should be footpaths off to the left down Mill Lane en-route to the visitor centre before you get to Ross Lave Lane.
Also might be worth trying around Denton Hall Farm area near the System 3 factory on Windmill Lane, there maybe some access around there.

thanks Rob There are no footpaths to this area as it is wholly private north and south of the wood though I didn 't see any harm in trespassing over abandoned fields of weeds from the south.

I have been offered this site as a part of the wider butterfly count initiative. On the map it looks totally inaccessible bounded, as it is, by two railway lines and the M60. It's on a steep hill and there are no access paths at all. I'm intrigued! Has anyone ever been to this site? SJ9094

Hi Tim,
If it's the correct site it's a small patch of woodland that was part of the original Reddish Vale CP which is literally minutes from my house near Dane Bank before they built the now Mill Lane estate, it is between the large pool and the grounds of Vale View School. As far as I know it IS accessible. The M60 and the railway lines go over Reddish Vale but nearer to this site the track is at level height and is crossable with the public access gates.
You need to get onto Mill Lane (off Windmill Lane) Denton / Reddish border, turn right onto Hollow Vale Drive and follow it to the very end of the Cul-de-sac. There is (or at least was) a footpath between the last 2 end houses that takes you into the area you want.
If you follow Mill Lane further down, you come to the railway tunnel and the car barriers and you are only 5 minutes walk from the Reddish Vale visitor centre. If going by car, the visitor centre has a car park ONLY accessible from the Houldsworth Square, Reddish side, driving passed Reddish Vale school and NW Regional Basketball Ctr.
Lots of farmland, riverside areas, ponds/lagoons, and woodland around the area. It leads all the way over to and beyond Denton Woods near the 'Z' bends at Bredbury and the M60, the Woods do an eventual circle of the whole of Haughton Green passing over the other Mill Lane in H/G leading you to Watson St Nurseries, over Manchester Rd near the Lowes Arms then under the M67 at Broomstairs Farm, then right through towards Hyde and Dukinfield.

I might add there's no shortage of birds around here...see Haughton Dale thread
Nuthatch
Treecreeper
Great Spotted Woodpecker
(The odd Green Woodpecker turns up too)
Grey Wagtail
Dipper
Numerous Thrush,
Tit,
Warbler,
Finch,
Gull species,
the Denton Brent Goose a couple of years back.

Hope this helps.
Cheers, Rob

Thanks for the directions Rob but that's not the area - Hollow Vale Drive is west of both railway lines. Denton Wood is in F8 p. 97 on the Greater Manchester A-Z SJ908943. I reccied the south side of the large and impenetrable wood from abandoned fields north of Ross Lave Lane. I have since discovered there is a private track going over the Reddish North to Brinnington line to the south of the Reddish South to Denton line. This is the area to be surveyed. It is south of that railway line and north of Denton Wood on the lower ground.
