Newchurch Common

Another morning visit, no snow and lots milder with a wee bit of rain in the air.

On Big Pool the highlights were a drake Goosander, a drake Pochard and 3 female Teal. Across the two main Pools 4 drake Shoveler were seen, 3 on Small Pool and 1 on Big Pool. On Big Pool a count of 4 Cormorants was one of the highest this winter and 2 Little Grebes were noteworthy. A Grey Heron was in West Bay, Big Pool in the bankside bushes. Several skeins of geese were watched off patch but viewable from the patch boundary, the final count being over 400 Pink-footed Geese moving SE at around 11.30am. A Lesser Black-backed Gull was down on Big Pool.

At least 6 Bramblings were in with around 4 Linnets, lots of Chaffinches and over 40 Goldfinches, feeding in crop fields that have gone top seed to the east of the Pine Belt. A Nuthatch was in the trees in the Pine Belt.  In the former setaside field 2 Mistle Thrushes were seen flying towards Gull Pool Wood. A Coal Tit was seen near the parking area and a male Reed Bunting was in Finch Hedge, where a Redwing was heard alarm calling.

On a snow-covered morning I had to go have a mooch around Big Pool to see if anything had dropped in.

My reward was a long-overdue patch yeartick in the shape of 3(2drk) Pochard, only just visible out on the misty lake. With the far shore not visible I was limited to ducks out to halfway and this included 2(1drk) Shoveler, which were new in. Also present were lost of Wigeon and Tufted Ducks and a few Gadwall, but with the mist/fog a count was not possible.

A Fieldfare was seen near the parking area as I arrived and a Redwing was in the same area as I left, both attracted by the hawthorn berries on the hedges here. Other than that it was eerily quiet, the fog seemingly dampening down any bird activity of note.

A brief morning visit after a tough week or so, a family funeral tomorrow, so getting there. Very cold, frost and ice, but bright and clear.

The main interest on the pools was on Small Pool where there were 7(3drk) Goosanders and 4 Teal. The Teal were out in the centre of the pool, probably as a result of the margins being frozen. On Big Pool there were at least 50 Wigeon and 12 Gadwall. A total of 5(4ad) Mute Swans were seen across the two pools. A Cormorant was on Big Pool too and at least 5 Moorhens were out on the water, again forced out from the frozen margins. A Grey Heron flew from Small Pool.

Away from the pools the headline bird was a male Brambling, feeding with Chaffinches in the field east of the Pine Belt. I didn't have time to check but it is almost certain that there were more Bramblings in this flock. Unseen Redwings were calling near the main entrance barrier. A Raven flew over too.

Had a nice morning walk in the sun which got warm late am. Thanks to Paul Hill, birding & drinking mate, for the lift after we dropped my car off for its MOT!

Again a new patch tick or 2023, this time it was a Mandarin on a small pool in Gull Pool Wood. I get these annually but the year was getting on and most of my sightings are in the breeding season. It flushed off the pool but was either a female or immature bird. Plenty of Wigeon on Big Pool and 2 Cormorants over. a small flock of 26 Pink-footed Geese flew over Shemmy Moss, this species seen in the last two visits after none had been seen all year previously! A Kingfisher gave a nice close fly-past on Big Pool.

A brief addition, just 3 miles away over my house on Sat 18th Nov am (the day after my Newchurch visit) I had 178 Pink-footed Geese over in 4 Skeins, obviously lots of local movement going on at the mo!

A very brief first November Patch Walk this afternoon, to blow away a few cobwebs as I've been dealing with a family bereavement this last few days. Bright, dry, cold and windy!

A patch yeartick was my reward in the shape of 120 Pink-footed Geese flying north over Shemmy Moss at 2.50pm. A Cormorant flew over too. Whilst looking for late dragonflies I flushed 8 Common Snipe but immediately that they went up I turned and left that area so as not to flush any more unnecessarily. Nothing else of note was seen or heard.

Popped on to patch for a morning walk, dull and very wet under foot.

On Big Pool there were 3(2drk) Goosanders which weren't there yesterday. There was also a huge influx of geese with 780 Canada Geese and 53 Greylag Geese. Also on the pool were 4 Cormorants and a Lesser Black-backed Gull. Most of the rest of the time was spent looking at fungi so birds took a back seat!

Went for an afternoon walk when the weather improved to dry and wispy sunshine!

The star bird was a Jack Snipe flushed from a private area and seen really well, close by a Common Snipe was also seen. Teal were heard on Gull Pool but no count could be made. On Big Pool 18 Wigeon were seen but no other significant duck numbers. A total of 41 Greylag Geese was noteworthy, all on Big Pool with the Canada Geese. A lone Cormorant flew over Big Pool.

At least 4 Stock Doves were in a harvested Maize field near Small Pool (the former Leek Field). A Bullfinch was seen near Finch Hedge where Chaffinch numbers seem to be building up too.

Went for an afternoon stroll before the rain of the approaching Storm Babet!

Pretty quiet with a female Goosander and 6 Wigeon being the Big Pool highlights. The Canada Goose flock now contained 2 Greylag Geese.

A Raven was heard over Gull Pool Wood. A Nuthatch showed well amongst tit flocks, which contained double-figure numbers of Long-tailed Tits, by the main track north of Small Pool.

Popped onto my patch this morning intending to head over to the mosses but a sighting on Big Pool scuppered that! Very cold but warming up in the sun.

The sighting in question was an adult Common Shelduck which is a patch rarity, being only the second that I have recorded here in my 9 years patching. The previous one was a flyover so this is the first down on the water too. I headed home immediately to grab my digiscoping gear but only record shots were obtained because it stayed out dead centre of Big Pool all the time I was there. Also on Big Pool were 3(2 eclipse drakes & 1 female) Goosanders and a drake Teal, all new in. Of the more common wildfowl species there were 3 Wigeon and c.12 Gadwall. Also on Big Pool 2 Comorants and 3 Common Gulls were present.

Jays were much in evidence collecting acorns from under the oaks all across my patch. Other than that just 5 Goldfinches flying high over the main track of note.

A very short morning walk, bright and not too cold!

Fewer Geese on Big Pool and only 2 Cormorants. It's always busier with fishermen at the weekend so the pools are quieter for birds. Single best sighting was a Goldcrest  in the Pine Belt, first heard calling by Carys and then seen by me.

A morning walk again, dry and still but not warm, even misty at first.

Hardly any birds of note. A count of 260 Canada Geese and a single Greylag Goose on Big Pool was noted. Also on Big Pool 3 Cormorants were seen. A total of 4 Mute Swans included 2 adults with a well-grown cygnet and another lone adult male.

A small flock of 12 Redwings flew over near the entrance barrier.

A morning walk, dry & warm with some sun.

The headline birds were 5 Redwings on Sandy Lane with 4 (probably migrant) Blackbirds, unexpected so early but coinciding with an increased East Coast arrival today after birds had been arriving since Thursday!

There were 4 Mute Swans present, a pair on each of Big and Small Pools. A Cormorant flew over the mosslands. There were 2 Grey Herons on Gull Pool.

Two Starlings were on Sandy Lane as were 2 Goldfinches. A Linnet was on Abbot's Moss and Nuthatches called at several locations.

P.S. after posting the Redwings on a Cheshire Whatsapp Group I had a private message from a birding pal who is in Yorkshire on hol & he had thousands of Redwings arriving on the coast to coincide with my sighting, explains it a bit more biggrin

First trip out for a while, dry and warm pm.

Very little, a Cormorant was on Big Pool as well as at least 10 Gadwall.

A Raven flew over the Big Pool area. A Chiffchaff called and was watched feeding in the ivy covered trees near the entrance Barriers.

Not keen on Sundays on patch, too busy, but when you work Saturday and Monday then needs must! Dry, and sunny at times.

Pretty quiet and concentrated on mosslands as fewer folk over there. A Grey Heron was on Shemmy Moss. A drake Gadwall was on Gull Pool.

At least 2 Chiffchaffs were heard calling, with one seen. A Nuthatch was in Gull Pool Wood. Two Ravens were over the mosslands. On Abbot's Moss a Jay did a superb impression of a Buzzard call in front of myself and another patch watcher, we were very impressed!

First time back after holiday! Short walk am, dry and warm and sunny.

On Big Pool there were several Gadwall and lots of Tufted Ducks. Two Mute Swans may have been a new resident pair. A new arrival were 2(1ad) Common Gulls with the Black-headed Gulls. A lone Cormorant was on here too and 3 Sand Martins dropped in to drink.

Two Ravens were calling in the Pine Belt as well as a Chiffchaff. Nuthatches were heard in two locations too. The final sighting was a kettle of 8 Buzzards circling over Daleford Farm.

Just next to my patch, in fact less than half a mile as the bird flies, I found a smart male Stonechat yesterday. This was in the hedge of our horse paddocks, predictably near the midden where there are most flies! A great local bird never recorded here before

An afternoon walk on my patch in fine, dry weather.

A pair of Gadwall were new in on Big Pool. A Kingfisher flew down Island Cut here too.

The best sighting of the day was a large group of feeding passerines in the first field east of the Pine Belt. The best birds in this were 2 Spotted Flycatchers, a patch mega and seen in the same field as the only other sighting this year, back on 18th June. Also in this group were 2 Chiffchaffs and a Nuthatch as well as mixed Blue and Great Tits.

On Big Pool a Kingfisher was a nice surprise. At least 3 Great Crested Grebe young were seen, getting quite big now.

A morning walk with mate Paul Hill produced few birds again.

Best of all was a family of at least 3 Green Woodpeckers calling to each other near Big Pool. A family of at least 5 Common Whitethroats was on Shemmy Moss. Also on Shemmy Moss 2(1y) Yellowhammers were seen.

A lone Swift and 2 Swallows were over Shemmy Moss.

A morning walk in the sun, but again not much on the bird front.

An increase over my last visit to c.38 Tufted Ducks on Big Pool. The most interesting sighting was a Great Crested Grebe with a small jack Pike in its beak!

A Yellowhammer was again north of Big Pool.

A morning walk with another guest, now a firm friend! Overcast mainly but warm, drizzle at the end.

It was brilliant to see proof of breeding north of Big Pool with 3(m,f,y) Yellowhammers on the wires over their field. A Grey Heron cruised around overhead here too.

An afternoon walk in hot sun and the only birds of note were in the same bush on Shemmy Moss. These were an adult Common Whitethorat feeding a young one,  and a Willow Warbler showing behaviour possibly indicating young nearby.

Headed out early hoping the weather would hold. Stayed fine for a bit but then torrential rain stopped play! For the second day running I had a Patch Lifer, this time it was a Common Sandpiper, on Beach Peg, Big Pool. Unfortunately it flushed but I saw it really well. Also on Big Pool was a Great Crested Grebe with 3 young. A total of 44 Tufted Ducks were also seen.

Went for a late afternoon visit to patch. Very late decision but turned out to be a mega decision! Fine and dry and warm, but later went black in the sky so left just before the rain.

A patch lifer and patch mega find was the highlight when north of Big Pool I was drawn to the sound of small birds, especially Blackbirds angrily chacking at something in the gorse. As I approached I got a huge shock when a Short-eared Owl appeared a few feet away from me and showed extremely well as it slowly flapped away westwards low to the ground and headed off round the gorse and out of sight. Not wanting to disturb it I left it at that, just very pleased to have seen it.

Other birds of note included 2 recently fledged Chiffchaffs near a bramble bank behind Beach Peg, that their nest was probably under. In the same area a feeding flock was already forming with Great Tits, Blue Tits, a Chiffchaff and 2 Bullfinches, fitting with the autumnal feel of the weather at the moment! A young Garden Warbler was also in this area, showing well.

A morning walk pre-rain, cloudy but warm.

A lone Wigeon was a surprise on Big Pool. A Cormorant circled in the distance and then flew over us, totally unlike a Cormorant and had hoped for something rarer!!

A male Sparrowhawk flew through and was constantly mobbed by 6 House Martins. Two Swifts were also seen. A male Yellowhammer was on the wires north of Big Pool.

An early start due to family circumstances. Dry with some sun at first, cloud later then rain!

On Big Pool there was a family of 2 Tufted Duck Ducklings with their mum. Over the water 4 Sand Martins skimmed low, a portent of the weather to come. A Lapwing was heard on Shemmy Moss. Also over Shemmy Moss were 3 Oystercatchers, flying round and calling noisily, as they do!

A Hobby was seen again, over Shemmy Moss and the Nurseries, but was just a fly through, right place, right time. A pair of Linnets showed well on the mosslands and a male Bullfinch was there too.

An unusual walk on Newchurch coz there were three of us! Myself and fellow patcher Dave were joined by mate Paul Hill and we mainly did the mosslands area. Very warm & sunny mostly.

The best bird was a Hobby hunting over Abbot's Moss where 2 Kestrels and 2 Buzzards were also seen. A really nice surprise was a newly hatched brood of 12 Tufted Duck Ducklings following their mum on Gull Pool. Yellowhammer, Skylark and Reed Bunting were all recorded as well as the usual warblers.

Morning & afternoon on patch, hot and sunny but breezy at times.

Confirmation of no Mute Swan Cygnets. An influx of 20 Tufted Ducks onto Big Pool. The 2 Oystercatchers were on the Abbot's Moss Nursery Fields and Skylarks sang overhead. Otherwise still quiet!

A morning visit, sunny intervals, warm.

Just as I started walking onto patch I had a phonecall asking for help as nearby a Mute Swan was on a fast main road walking towards the town of Winsford! I headed there as fast as possible and was amazed to find a police car and a police van in attendance as they had received 2 calls from the public. I checked the swan over and it was uninjured, so I carried it about 1/4ml to where I knew I could access the R.Weaver, as the road had 12 foot fencing all along it elsewhere. I released it onto the river and it swam away none the worse for its experience! I think the police were glad someone attended  who knew what they were doing and they were really friendly. I doused my hands in copious hand sanitiser afterwards of course! Then good deed for the day done I returned to Newchurch.

Not a lot bird-wise but several young birds seen as proof of breeding, in the company of adults. These included Nuthatch, Blackcap, Willow Warbler, Chiffchaff, Great Tit, Moorhen, Little Grebe, Great Crested Grebe and Mallard. But from a distance it looked like zero Mute Swan Cygnets now with the male swan on Big Pool. A mate told me that he'd only had one a few days ago so this could mean the whole brood has been lost.

Nothing much on the avian front, just a recently fledged Chiffchaff, still with it's gape, really nice to see it was pumping its tail like an adult!!

On Newchurch am, overcast and warm.

On Small Pool a Great Crested Grebe fed a well grown chick and on Gull Pool a Little Grebe fed a chick. An Oystercatcher was heard over Shemmy Moss whilst an adult Water Rail showed well on South Moss.

A Peregrine was seen flying over the nursery fields with a bird in its talons. Distantly over the mosses 2 Buzzards were soaring with one having central tail feathers missing and looking to have a forked tail!!

On South Moss 2m Bullfinches bathed in one of the shallow pools. The 5 common warbler species were all recorded.

The good news from Big Pool is that 3 Mute Swan cygnets survive in the company of the male swan, but sadly now no sign of the female since 11th June, we suspect that she has died. The pair of Oystercatchers flew in a noisy display flight over Big Pool. There was a definite increase in waterbirds on Big Pool, especially Tufted Ducks, Great Crested Grebes and Coot. A Kestrel hunted in the Big Pool area.

A late report due to being very very busy and at work since!

A Spotted Flycatcher was seen on my patch near the main track between the pools on Thursday 15th June in the afternoon, by myself and Carys my wife. Today I received a report that it (or another) had been picked up approx 1.5km to the west of here. Not a patch lifer or a UK yeartick but a good bird for 2023 on patch.

Up very early so onto patch this morning. Hot and sunny.

The best sighting today was a well-grown young Water Rail in the area in which 2 adults have been summering, superb to have absolute proof of breeding on patch. Other breeders included a young Tufted Duck and 4(ad+3y) Little Grebes, all on Gull Pool.

A male Reed Bunting was on breeding territory and all 5 common warbler species were recorded, including good views of a different Garden Warbler to yesterdays one. A large group of young Blue Tits suggest a better year for this species compared to last year. A Raven and a Buzzard were over Shemmy Moss.

Back on patch am in hot sun.

The single best sighting was an adult Garden Warbler feeding a well grown chick that was begging for food. I watched this for about 10mins, a privilege when just seeing a Garden Warbler can be hard sometimes! An Oystercatcher flew over Big Pool calling and a Little Grebe called on the pool, not a usual location for this species in the summer months. There are still 3 Mute Swan cygnets but only the male adult seen, worryingly no sign of the female.

Another walk, another guest, still hot and sunny, but some cloud today after thunderstorms last night!

The male Yellowhammer was on the wires over the field to the north of Big Pool. Still 3 Mute Swan cygnets but the female looking suspiciously unwell  no  A pair of Bullfinches was also near Big Pool.

Down on my patch am and pm today, am to do management (as I'm the only one doing it!!) and pm for a mooch. Still hot and sunny.

The Cuckoo was still calling am N.of Big Pool in its new area, heard but not seen. A Kingfisher was a nice surprise fishing on Small Pool pm, the first that I've ever seen on my patch in summer. A Great Crested Grebe was seen with a stripey youngster on its back on Small Pool. A tatty male Yellowhammer was on wires above the field N.of Big Pool. The 3 Mute Swan cygnets still survive! Again Sand Martins were feeding over Big Pool pm.

An afternoon visit after 2 days in work. Sunny and warm.

From a great distance it now looks like it's just 3 Mute Swan cygnets with the 2 adults. The family has depleted very swiftly and this isn't good news at all.

Over Big Pool a huge flock of 150 Sand Martins were feeding, could this mean that the nearby Crown Farm Quarry colony now has young to feed? Also with these hirundines were at least 6 Swifts. A Chiffchaff that was one of the first to arrive has resumed singing after a long silent period north of Big Pool, second brood time possibly?

The (or a new) Cuckoo was calling north of Big Pool, the first heard over in this area this year.

Another visit today, both morning and afternoon, swelteringly hot.

There are now just 4 Mute Swan Cygnets remaining, the family is declining fast unfortunately. A Grey Heron flew over Shemmy Moss and then circled up high to drift off distantly. An Oystercatcher called nearby. The Water Rail was again present.

The Cuckoo showed well again on top of a tree by the mosslands.  A Hobby was seen high above Big Pool and several Swifts were also high up here. Several Feral Rock Doves flew over, a scarcity here, and a  Stock Dove flew through the mosses. A Raven was also on the mosses.

Several young passerines were seen, including Robins, Great Tits and Blue Tits. A Garden Warbler was seen taking a beakful of food to a nest. The first Skylark for a while was singing over the nursery fields and Linnets were nearby on the mosslands.

Again a brief visit mainly for insects when the sun came out this afternoon.

But a few birds of note, especially the gulls. They were prepping the fields east of the Pine Belt for crops, potatoes by the look of it, and this attracted in lots of gulls. The star amongst these was my first patch Mediterranean Gull of the year, a lovely full summer adult. Also down in the field were 25 Lesser Black-backed Gulls and 6 Herring Gulls, high counts for both species other than flyovers or in an evening roost. On Big Pool now 5 Mute Swan cygnets remain with the 2 adults, I never expected all 7 to survive, I just wonder how many more will end up disappearing. A large feeding flock over Big Pool consisted of over 100 Sand Martins, 1 House Martin, 6 Swallows and 4 Swifts.

After 2 days in work it was back on patch with 2 guests today, Nasreen & Muhammed, fantastic company and a pleasure to show around, started at 9am and finished 5.30pm!!

Highlights on the bird side were a Hobby and a Cuckoo on Shemmy Moss, the former species showing so well and the latter just heard. A fem Kestrel was hunting, also over Shemmy Moss. On Gull pool were 3(2ad) Little Grebes, the first young one seen this year. A pair of Yellowhammers were seen mating on Shemmy Moss and 3m Reed Buntings were seen in total, 2 on Shemmy Moss and 1 at Gull Pool. a small group of 5 House Martins were over the main track as we returned to our cars. A Stock Dove flew over Abbot's Moss.

YESTERDAY 25th MAY 2023 :

Two walks taking all day! Morning around Big Pool area and afternoon on the mosslands, sunny and hot throughout and less breezy than the day before.

The Mute Swan pair on Big Pool have a brood of 7 cygnets, just hatched. Also over Big Pool 2 Swifts and 2 House Martins flew high over. Over on the mosses a Hobby showed very well as it hunted dragonflies over Shemmy Moss. More distant but showing well, calling on top of a tree was a male Cuckoo, in the direction of Nunsmere from Abbot's Moss. Also of note were a Long-tailed Tit near Big Pool and a Great Spotted Woodpecker and 2 Stock Doves over Shemmy Moss.

A short walk pm in hot sunshine but breezy. Stayed around Big Pool only.

Highlight was a Hobby over the meadows east of Big Pool, given the huge number of odonata this was not unexpected. A Rook over the same area was unusual for here. Also seen was 1 Swift over Big Pool with 2 Swallows.

On patch all day today, am leading a walk for mates to get pics of Downy Emerald and pm for myself!!

This morning we had superb views of the Cuckoo over Shemmy Moss when I called it in after we heard it calling distantly. I always do this little trick for visitors and it never fails to amuse when I do my cuckoo whistle and the bird responds and flies in. I believe that it provides environmental enrichment for what is possibly a lone male on my patch.

This afternoon I watched the Hobby come into Shemmy Moss a couple of times but even better was a distant Red Kite over the pines at the far side of Abbot's Moss Nursery fields. This was a  patch tick for 2023. Also up in the sunny weather were Buzzard and Sparrowhawk.

An afternoon in sunshine and pretty warm again. Again with my fellow patcher Dave.

A couple of major highlights, both new birds for the patch for 2023. The first of these was a singing Lesser Whitethroat between the Whitegate Way and Shemmy Moss, this being the area in which I always have this species, presumably passing through. Soon after Dave and I watched a Hobby over Shemmy Moss as it visited twice, both times not really lingering or hunting.

Also over Shemmy Moss were a Kestrel and a Buzzard in good raptor weather. A Water Rail, called from the sedge beds and Linnets were atop the adjacent trees. As always the background singing of Garden Warblers was non-stop, this patch speciality seemingly everywhere with at least 10 singing males counted.
