Hi Mike,

Dave Winnard is going to send us the posts from the old Manchester Wildlife forum and these will be incorporated into the survey results. However, you will hopefully have some new records that you can submit using the RODIS link below

Mole Survey

Also all records received will be supplied to the Mammal Society for the new national Mammal Atlas. Recording for this runs until 2015 and older records going back to 2000 will also be incorporated.

Steve

There was a reasonably well used thread recording mole sightings on Dave Winnard's Manchester Wildlife Forum. Is there a way of passing on that data without entering all the records individually? I know the Forum can still be accessed in read only format.

The GM Local Record Centre has just launched a Greater Manchester Mole survey. Moles are rarely seen, but the evidence of their presence, in the form of fresh molehills are easily spotted, even from a moving car!

With your help we can build up a picture of where moles are currently found in GM and where not.

To take part in the survey just click on the link below and enter your mole hill (or mole) sightings into RODIS.
Mole Survey

When the RODIS screen appears

Click Cancel and use information from our database.

To add a record simply fill in the yellow fields (as a minimum) at the top section of the screen (more detail the better). Mole hill is an option in the sex/stage drop down menu.

When everything looks fine click on Add Record and your record will be added to the master below.

To find the location and insert the grid reference, click on the G Map button, search for the location (place name, road, address or postcode), zoom in to the location (zoom in as close as you can) and then click on the map in the location of the sighting and then click Insert Grid Reference. In Our Location you can find the nearest registered site by using the Find button, or just select an area from the list. You could add the location description or address in the Full Location box.

When adding yourself as the observer and determiner first try to search for yourself by surname. If you cant find your name then you are likely not yet in the list of already used RODiS observers. In which case click on New Name and add yourself (this bit only needs to be done once). You will then be able to select yourself as the observer (person that observed the mole) and determiner (person that confirmed the species).

If you have any problems adding your records to the master set give Paul a call on 0161 342 3123 and he will be happy to talk you through adding your record(s) over the phone. There is also a comprehensive user manual here for anybody keen to learn more about RODiS and wanting a user account of their own. We will shortly announce dates for free RODiS training sessions early in the new year. RODIS User manual

We will be publishing the results of the survey sometime next year. In the meantime if you'd like to find out more about Moles have a look at the Mammal Society website
