Many thanks to everyone who has replied to my plea - I've got a few ideas now.
Cheers, Martyn

Hi Folks

I desperately need a new pair of bins and I since I've put all my money into a lens, I only have about £300 to spend. I know the advice is to go and try a few pairs out at InFocus or somewhere similar, which I will be doing, but I'd like some starting suggestions (brands / models) to consider. I think I'll probably go for 8x42, but might look at 10x42 too. I'll probably buy online once I've decided.

Any suggestions appreciated, cheers.

I have sent you a PM, as I have experience of a wide range of binoculars due to my job I would be happy to guide you through your choice, but remember any recommendations are only a rough starting point, your eyes are different to everyone elses & what suits you may be different to several other folk. As well as working with binoculars day in, day out and having access to a myriad of models at Focalpoint, my PhD was in visual processing so I have scientific knowledge as well as being a birder & would be happy to help Also don't think you have to spend the full £300 to get the best, you may prefer a pair at under £200, in this sector of the ma4rket much of the cost is manufacturing costs & accessories rather than optical quality.

I have the previous version of these which are pretty decent for £250:

I believe Minox are supposed to be quite good. Last pair I looked through were impressive, although i couldn't say which model. Ace cameras are selling the BA model at around £300. Nikon have also, I understand, updated the monarch range -Monarch 7. A site called Microglobe are selling the 8x42 model at just over 300. If they're anything like the other Nikon bins I've tried you wouldn't go far wrong with them either I expect.

When I had the same question (2 years ago now) I was told that Hawke ED 8x42 were the best in my price range, I am extremely happy with them
