Yesterday Birdguides announced that 'British International Helicopters will not be operating services between Penzance and St. Mary's on 2nd to 15th October 2012 inclusive. Anyone with a booking will be offered alternative arrangements.'
This comes on the back of a press release earlier this month
You can fly with Flybe to Newquay from Manchester (about £70), I suspect this is cheaper than the train. Skybus to Scilly from Newquay is about £150 British International (who are moving to Newquay, allegedly) is about £190
I don't know if the facility is still there but when I used to hitch down to Penzance and had time to kill to go birding eg Marazion nearby, or go for a pint, the railway station had large lockers where you can secure all your gear for a few pence.

Try the Skybus from Lands End here a bus from Penzance will drop you there. It does a circular route Penzance - Lands End - St. Ives - Penzance and so is convienient for dropping in on other hotspots such as Porthgwarra, Cot Valley, Kenidjack, Hayle etc.
The train and bus stations are adjacent to each other and are within walking distance of the Scillonian and the Heliport, take your pick.

Hello, I've been considering a trip to the scilly isles for a while and would be looking at autumn time. I was just wandering if anyone has any tips or experience on how to get there from Manchester! I don't drive so public transport would be the obvious choice! I can see online its either boat of helicopter from Penzance or Newquay? But it would be helpful if someone has done the trip before and can offer tips on getting down there to coincide with connections etc! I've been to fair isle twice and planned those trips with ease! I love fair isle but just wanted to know how easy it was to reach the other hotspot! Thanks in advance Kevin
