Following our trip to Gilfach Nature Reserve today, we (the Bolton RSPB Group) moved on to spend 2 hours on the Elan Valley Estate. This is just to the southwest of Rhayader. This Estate covers 180 square km. of the valley, the massive reservoir complex, and the woodlands. Today we just looked around Cnwch Wood, which includes a a lot of sessile oak trees and is a designated SSSI. This wood is close to Elan Village, across the Afon Elan by metal bridge. Sightings: Leaving the Elan Visitors Centre we were met by a male Redstart on a small post. More Redstarts were seen in the wood proper as well as Pied Flycatchers, Three Red Kites were seen. A Wood Warbler gave good protracted views. Another was heard. Also singles of Treecreeper and Spotted Flycatcher.
