RE: Nesting Sand Martins/ Returning Bird Watcher

I remember when I was a kid (over 40 years ago),
Romiley Golf Course used to have a very large sand quarry area and had at least 10 pairs of Sand Martins nesting there.
Its all gone now.
I have no idea when it went but when I played the course last year it brought it all back to me. Its just grassed over now.

Hi Terence

Is it possible that the sites designated were Sites of Biological Importance (SBI's) rather than SSSI's? This is the designation for sites of a local importance across Greater Manchester.

Steve's advice on the GM Ecology Unit would still apply for the SBI's.

Hope you enjoy your re-fired interest

Cheers
Dave

If you want to find out about designated SSSIs in Greater Manchester, contact the Greater Manchester Ecology Unit.

Steve Atkins will put you in touch with the right member of staff I'm sure:

e-mail Stephen.Atkins@tameside.gov.uk

Hi

I was an avid ornithologist in my youth but gradually drifted away as other interests took over, mainly music! Anyway after recently doing a lot more walking and really enjoying it I thought why not take some binoculars and a camera along. Following on from this my interest in ornithology was fired again!

Obviously I will have questions! But I wanted to say hi first and just ask one.

A number of years ago I was involved in a habitat survey of the whole Wigan borough. As a consequence a number of sites were designated SSSIs among them a nesting site for Sand Martins. However on searching the web site at naturalengland for this site I discovered it was not listed there. I don't want to just specify exactly where this site was just to check if its still extant but would like to know if anyone is or was aware of this site and has any details. If so could they pm me?

Terence
