they tend to return to breeding territories in late March/early April and start to nest late April.

So many places...will have to pick one for a visit soon! Does anyone know when Twite will return to the moors to breed?

To answer the Light Hazzles question Joe, no, it's not seeded for Twite anymore. As a result, Twite there are irregular at best and certainly not practically 'nailed-on' like they used to be in winter I'm afraid. Always worth a look along there though, particularly as its a lovely part of the county and any Twite sightings up there are not only particularly special but are of serious importance

Do you know what time of year Light Hazzles is good, and do they still feed them there?

I've heard Deer Hill Reservoir near Marsden is reliable.
Also Whiteholme Reservoir / Light Hazzles Reservoir near Littleborough

Many thanks for the suggestions, I'll certainly try those places if I get time between now and the end of winter (which I hope to be the case!) Best thing about these sites is that there are other birds about so if I miss twite, no worries!

Hi Joe, there is a regular wintering flock (50+) on Southport beach south of the pier ranging down to the Weld Road Beach car park and on to the "Green Beach". Flock usually has several birds with multiple colour rings.

Joe, I had four at Red Rocks before Christmas. They were in with a small flock of Linnet and they were on the marsh between Red Rocks and West Kirkby. Apparently they're there every year at this time though it can be hit and miss to see them. I've also been told that Thursaston shore can have them in winter sometimes too. Another good place apparently is Flint marsh on the Welsh side of the Dee.

Hi, does anyone know a good spot for twite that's not Heysham? Its a bit far for just one bird, anywhere closer, either winter or summer?

There are regular flocks at Flint/Oakenholt Marsh (upto 70 birds this winter) on the welsh side of the Dee Estuary and lesser numbers on the saltmarsh at the Point of Ayr at the mouth of the Dee Estuary (upto 10 birds this winter).
