I've just got the Birdguides app for the iPhone. It's really good. It has all the usual species to be found on the British Isles as well as a few of the common vagrants - 270 species to be exact. Each bird has several illustrations along with sound recordings of song and flight calls, etc. It costs £12.99 and for me it's well worth it. The only downside to it is it doesn't have any of the rarer birds that occasionally pop up.

I use the BirdGuides app, but it is only really useful if you subscribe to their Bird News Anywhere service. Quite nice when you go on and see a bird alert for something that you want to go for - just hit a button and it plots your route for you and tells you how far away it is.

The app itself is free, but not of a lot of use without the subscription part.

I am pensioning off my trusty Motorola Razar and getting one of them smartphone thingys probably 10 years after the rest of the world!. Anyway are there any Birding Apps ouit there that are useful ? or are they just micky mouse? The way I am thinking is you need your phone out with you anyway so not taking any extra stuff. But other than a field guide which might be useful now and again I can't think other than that they would be much use? Anyway would be nice to hear if anyone else has used them
