RE: barn owls

Hi Jason,

Not aware of any barn owls in or around the Glossop area, I have been reliably informed its been many years since there were any here (certainly as breeding birds).

http://www.pebog.org.uk/about might be worth a quick read.

Cheers

Mike

had 7 in eas anglia last year in a fortnight.

fortunately i only have to do a 100 mile round trip to see them rather than going all the way there.
i was just hoping something a little closer to home might crop up now i've been made redundant again

The county recorder revealed that there were 14 known breeding pairs in 2006, that may have diminished since with the cold winters so whatever pairs we have left are going to be kept very quiet about.

However, if you use the search option on the sightings forum, as with any other bird, you can get a fair idea of the likely areas to see one, beyond that it's habitat knowledge, field craft and very good luck - I go to East Anglia for mine!

I would hope that no one would be daft enough to disclose ant breeding sites, privately or publically.

Frankly Jason, your only real option is to check the forum sightings regularly. Any Barn Owl sightings posted on there are done so with no risk what so ever to the birds or their breeding sites and have been deemed suitable for public divulgence

not being a manchester native, my knowledge of birding sites round here isn't particularly good, it's getting a damned site better thanks to all the people on here,
as demonstrated by last years uk year list being 152 and me hitting 150 for this year yesterday.

but i'm at a loss for where i would find a barn owl locally glossop side of manchester or even to what degree if any the owl exist in the manchester area.

i'm not asking for people to tell me nesting sites but if there are any well known areas where these owls are sighted regularly could people let me know please
