The Bickershaw Rucks sightings thread contains references to areas (C8, C9, etc). Where is a map of these available?
Hi David, the map we are using we got from Roy Rhodes, LOS conservation officer, Roy is in discussions with Wigan mbc and various other bodies, there are plans to turn much of the old opencast site into a nature park, we are working with Roy to record our sitings and have some input as to the nature of any changes, i know that Roy is pretty regular contact with Ian so it may be possible to have a map on the forum to show the different compartments. C9 is Diggle flash and surrounding area, C6 is Fir Tree flash and surrounding area, C8 is the fields either side of the new road, C3 is Tinker Joes flash and surrounding area, C4 is the top of the main rucks,
I do indeed have a copy of the map and in the near future it will be included in a site guide for the area. Currently though, some of the compartments are very sensitive areas and disturbance needs to be kept to a minimum due to the type of habitat up there, hence it is not currently publically available. Bernard's general summary of compartments is a very good starting point though

It's all a work in progress and just another evolutionary stage
Though I've been sat on the image for a year or so now before I found the time to use it, all the credit must go to Adrian Dancy for taking such an incredible image which he generously permitted me to use.
Great trip report for Finland Tim, you must of spent a lot of time putting it together, it was great reading it, those owls pics are superb

Many thanks Dennis. Yes it takes a while to do these reports but great fun. Huge thanks to Ian too as it takes quite a time to prepare them for the site and make them look really good.
Cheers Simon for putting together the trip report for Hungary, i remember you mentioning the holiday before you went on a walk round elton, superb pictures and a very detailed report, you had a good time, some fantastic birds in that area, Not somewhere ive ever thought of for birding before but i can see why you like it, Brilliant stuff

A Peculiar P10 an excellent article well presented and a good read, however most of us are still trying to get to grips with the overall appearance, of Caspian Gulls, your method of feather f***ing is one to be admired , we doff our caps and salute you with our pencils:big grin:

Good point Ian, i have changed the title to avoid any confussions with real new site updates, i thought this was a good idea to have somehwhere to chat about site stuff, and also to shine a little light on the part of the website that as you also said not everybody is aware of,

Id like to start by saying how much i enjoyed Peter Welch's Cairngorm and Inverness trip report, excellent photos of red grouse, crested tit and Ptarmigan too, Cheers for that Peter,
Thanks very much Dennis, I hope the reports help people out as I've learned so much from this forum and from the friendly folk on here it's the least I can do! I'm looking forward to having more time on my hands so I can beat the minor twitching bug I have and become a patch birder too
I can see the arguments for and against a thread like this but I quite often wish I could thank people for reports, excellent sightings and inspiring photos...
My only worry with this type of thread (a few have started like it but died over the years) is that folk will stop bothering to look at the 'What's new' page on the website if the arrival of new items are posted here. It unfortunately would happen and that's why I've I'd never set up such a thread myself. It's still quite remarkable how many forum users don't realise that there is even a Manchester Birding website which, in the chicken and eggs stakes, came first!

The Trip Reports section is one of the best aspects of this site, some of the photography is superb. If you haven't read through the historic ones, its a decent way to spend a free hour. Invaluable if your visiting the location, hopefully many more to come (if someone can do a Mull one before I go up there at the end of May, it would be most appreciated !!!!!)
I thought this would be a good topic for us Gmbirders to have section where we can chat and comment about whats New on the site, identification articles, species study, surveys, county lists, site guides, the list is almost endless, a lot of time must go into these articles and id like to say thanks to Ian and the contributers for there contributions,
