I live up in Co. Durham, though I was born in Manchester, and although there is a wealth of great birding in the N.E. I really enjoy visiting and birding in Gr. Manchester whenever I get an opportunity. This is in large measure due to the superb website (set up by a certain Mr. McKercher) and to the birding community down there which is as friendly and inclusive as one could wish.
If I might offer a little advice; get yourself a good fieldguide (try the new "Collins"), and a notebook and biro to take in the field with you and start enjoying looking, listening, and learning. You may be surprised at how much easier identification becomes once you get to know the vocalisations (i.e. calls and songs).
Best Wishes
Mike P.
