Better still, we managed to find a very late nest with White Storks in on one of our car journeys and, as we were heading back between Szczecin and Poznan on the train, a group of about eight Common Crane spotted in a field!
If we'd gone to the east of Poland we'd have hiked up the species count considerably.
Been visiting friends in this area and found a cracking reedbed reserve called Karsibor Kepa on Wolin "island" near the German border. This wasn't really a birding holiday, we didn't even have a scope but we managed over 60 species in two weeks, highlights being a total of six White-Tailed Eagles three of which were at the above reserve and one seen flying over Szczecin city. Most of the summer visitors appeared to have gone so we didn't see Aquatic Warbler which is a speciality. Lots of Black Terns on the lagoon plus Crested Tits in any forested areas. Saw no other birders whatsoever.
The flight to Poland cost about the same as the ferry company were trying to charge us to cross the few miles from Oban to Mull in the summer which we refused to pay and missed out on the eagles - Poland is still quite cheap with lovely food and scenery and what's so special about a British list anyway?
