Tried to do as full as possible count in Lilford Woods (mostly excluding the Atherton Woods side of the track) today before the leaves start intruding (!)
Some leeway needed for auditory records given uncertainty about very mobile birds calling across the woodland "interior!"

Great Tit 20
Blue Tit 20
Wren 17
Robin 24
Nuthatch 10 ?
Coal Tit 1
Jay 3
Treecreeper 4
Great Spotted Woodpecker 2 seen NE end, 1 drumming Lilford Park end could have been different or same bird.
Song Thrush 2
Chaffinch 1
Redwing 2
Goldfinch 2
Goldcrest 1 (Was actually on edge of Atherton woods)
Dunnock 2

New "patch tick" for me today in the form of a Grasshopper Warbler heard reeling in the reed-grass of Lilford Flood Basin. No glimpse - yet.

Brief visit to Lilford Flood Basin this afternoon as I missed it out the other day - not very much going one except 2 Common Buzzard high over, and an awful lot of Woodpigeon.
2 more Buzzard were soaring high over Atherton seen from the edge of Atherton Wood.

On my way to Lilford a female Sparrowhawk shot missile-like across the trees at Woodend and into the back garden of an Elmridge bungalow, to emerge a few moments later with a Great Tit in its claws, no doubt courtesy of a bird feeder! Then at high speed back across the field to the trees bordering Lilford Park for its snack. Quite a dramatic sight!

Patch Tick for me this morning as 6 Ring Necked Parakeets flew noisily over Lilford Flood Basin as I was fighting my way through the Himalayan Balsam with my machete - well almost! - and landed on some distant trees direction Atherton South. Certainly not seen these before so close to home.

Slightly unexpected weather window this morning 0830 - 10.30 bright and breezy with a little rain.

Lilford Flood Basin, Langley Platt, Miller's Lane, Bee Fold and back. I keep thinking it's the sort of area that could throw up something unusual but not today! The big flocks of Fieldfare and Redwing seem to have moved on.

4 Mallard
1 Moorhen heard
7 Carrion Crow
1 Jackdaw
7 Jay
5 Great Tit
3 Chaffinch
1 Dunnock
11 Blue Tit
14 Blackbird

6 Bullfinch
45 Goldfinch
6 Long Tailed Tit
2 Wren
2 Common Buzzard
1 Redwing
2 Mistle Thrush

Same route as Sunday, more leisurely 1.30pm to 4pm, dull and misty tried to brighten a little!

Chaffinch 7
Great Tit 6
Goldfinch 10
Robin 7 with 8 more heard
Wren 5 with 2 more heard
Dunnock 2
Long Tailed Tit 37 - seemed to be all over the place

Meadow Pipit 9
Pied Wagtail 3

Mistle Thrush 1
Redwing 57
Fieldfare 78
Jay 1 with 5 more heard
Jackdaw 6 flew over
Carrion Crow 6
Common Buzzard 2
Kestrel 1m on Lilford flood basin in trees

Moorhen 2

One large field by Atherton Wood held
4 Grey Heron
14 Black Headed Gulls and 1 Lesser Black Backed Gull

Many more gulls over

The count of Redwing was greatly aided by some very loud fireworks being let off for no apparent reason on the Long Causeway near Atherton Wood. Cue mass take-off of Redwing.
The count of Fieldfare similarly aided by the passage of about 100 lively school children seemingly en route on foot from Tyldesley to Atherton via Miller's Lane! Cue mass take-off of winter thrushes.

Kestrel 1 (+ 1 in flight 30 mins later may have been same bird)

Great Spotted Woodpecker 1

Blackbirds ++

The flooded field areas seem to be attracting quite a few birds at present. A few days ago I saw 10 Teal on a semi-permanent flood near Bee Fold Fishery.

Overflying gulls:

Lesser and/or Great Black Backed - at least 10

Plus numerous Great Tit, Blue Tit, Blackbird.

Meadow or Tree?!?
One more bird of interest, perched on a wire fence about 100 yards over a field inaccessible to me. Using 10x50 bins resting a fence post my side of the field it was a pipit. No camera - but having read Ian's description of the Tree Pipit with its pronounced eye stripe, the very light underparts, and the regimented arrangement of the streaking, I THINK it may have been one. Too far away to note the mean expression or the incompleteness of the eye ring! I suppose I shall not be able to count this potentital lifetime tick until I get a better ID and preferably a photo of one!!
